Beautiful Book and a Good Source of Travel Ideas
By Brett H
This is a large, lavishly illustrated book which describes 74 journeys from around the world. Some of these are traditional routes such as the Spice Road or the Silk Road, whilst others are from the more modern era such as the Hippy Trail and Route 66. These journeys are split into various sub headings - Overland (7), Rail (13), Explorers and Conquerors (9), Rivers and Seas (9), Ancient Trade Routes (5), Literary Journeys (8), Road (14) and Walks and Pilgrimages (9).
Four pages are devoted to each journey and about half of the available space is filled with pictures, including one full page picture for each journey. Hence, of necessity, you are just given a brief glimpse each time for what, in many cases, could fill a book all on its own. Therefore, the main purpose of this book is as a taster, to give the traveller new ideas and possibly the inspiration to visit places they have not considered before, or to give the armchair traveller the experience of visiting off the beaten track places mentally if not physically. However, due to space limitations, it is very short on detail. For example, one of my own favorite places is Samarkand, which merits just a few lines and says very little.
Each journey contains a section entitled 'the journey today'. What Lonely Planet have always been noted for is good, down to earth practical information and advice and I would say that this is what this book is, to a large extent missing. For example the first journey which is the Hippy Trail advises under the journey today section, 'You've crossed the Iranian border near Mashhad into Afghanistan.........'. Yeah, right! I guess the answer is that if the brief description has roused you into actually wanting to do the trip the next step is to buy the Lonely Planet or other detailed guide book of the area to determine the practicalities.
To summarise this is a well presented book which I imagine most would be pleased to receive as a gift. It is well illustrated and looks and feels like an expensive volume. It is interesting as a brief taster of many diverse parts of the world, and is probably the sort of book you will dip in and out of, reviewing areas of interest rather than reading cover to cover.

coffee table sized, beautifully photographed, written to take you on journeys
By Gary Miller
We all love beautiful books that talk to us and this new, first edition of Great Journeys, Smart Travel by Lonely Planet is a stunner that is a large format book, think coffee table sized that showcases the beautiful full color photos inside.
I like a book to speak to me, to invite me to pick it up, and then decide if it's a keeper, or great resource, or one that goes on the shelf, this book quite immediately let me know it's value, from it's photos of beauty to it's prose like narratives. Like in the chapter that begins...
Why do we travel? To broaden our minds? To get away from ourselves and other people ( or conversely to `find' ourselves)? or take the chapter on Overland Travel's first offering - The Hippy Trail, that the founders of Lonely Planet started on, from London through Istanbul and Teheran and Kabul, down to Kashmir, Delhi, and ending in Goa, a true hippy paradise friends have told me about. You'll see maps, large ethnic photos of those along the way, and Essential Experiences, like Relaxing on Paradise Beach in Mykonos ( which I remember from the 60's too ) or Pai, northern Thailand or Kuta in Bali( ahhhh I want to go..). Each page is large with colorful photos with descriptions like the Pokhara, an area in Nepal, a mountain retreat and the welcoming character, face painted in bright green, crown of jewels, fingers with long nails or gold.
The world is well covered in the book, take the chapter on Road, as it's called, I saw photo narratives on Icefields parkway, from Jasper to Banff, Canada, it even made Winter look inviting again. The Essential Experience was a dawn view of Lake Louise ( which i remember the turquoise hued lake's reflection one day there ). At the bottom of the page has some helpful and interesting information: Distance 232 KM, Countries Covered - Canada, Ideal Time Commitment - three to four days, Essential Tip - Drive in the early morning or late afternoon for the best chance of spotting wildlife.
Each chapter really is a book unto itself, and the themes are well chosen. This is a beautiful book that you'll savor...

Idea Book
By Paul Moskowitz
Great Journeys; great book! This is not a typical Lonely Planet guide book. It does not list hotels or restaurants or exchange rates. It provides ideas for travel. There are three hundred pages of journeys. Each of the journeys gets four pages of mostly photographic images, making for an easy read.
I was pleased to see that I had actually done some of the journeys. Certainly, I can count the European Grand Tour and the Italian literary tour, which overlap a great deal. Also, I can include following at least some of the route of the Tour de France. Actually, you cannot travel in France without retracing some of the stages of the over one hundred years of the Tour.
Some of the journeys may be more theoretical than practical. Following Marco Polo's overland route to China can be accomplished, but not without great difficulty. I saw it done on a TV travel documentary by two guys from Queens; In the Footsteps of Marco Polo. Some of the travel required having a band of well armed companions.
Because of the four page limitation, there is not enough room for all of the details of what you might experience on each journey. For example, I think that following Route 66 through the American Southwest should include standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. However, there are references for additional reading. Perhaps accidental discoveries are what make traveling interesting.
