Man the Bird could play

This book really helps you appreciate what a master of jazz Charlie Parker really was. Seeing all of these solos with the chord changes right above sometimes makes you wonder "How did he think to do that?"

I like using this book for sight reading practice and a little bit of analysis afterwards. I read through the solos veeeery slowly (did I mention he's ridiculous?) and then look over the parts that I thought sounded pretty cool to see what he was doing. If you're a trombone player don't be intimidated that he had buttons to press very rapidly, just buy the book and play some great jazz, even if you're playing at 1/3 the tempo.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in improvising or just reading jazz. Especially trombone players.

Parker for Trombone

The book is an awesome transcription of Charlie Parker and his amazing solo and style. It is very accurate. It's a great way to enhance your improvisation library. The only problem that I had, was that the music is written down an octave than sounded by Charlie Parker. Obviously the tenor sax plays in a higher range. It's not really a problem, but you have to play an octave higher along with the recordings to try and match the timbre of the instruments. I guess it saves you from reading ledger lines or tener clef. Anyway, great book for a great price.

A must have for a jazz vocab.

First off, I have to correct funkybass4ever "baynzer66" 's review as he/she has commented that all transcriptions are in the key of C. This is incorrect and misleading. However all transcriptions are devoid of key signatures which is very useful in jazz, especially in bebop due to the rapid movement through key centers and the heavy use of chromaticism.

Now to the book itself. I view the omni book as one of the most valuable books of transcriptions out there, even if there are a few mistakes in it. It's one of those books that anyone learning the language of jazz needs to at least look at. It's nice to see that it's in bass clef (as I play bass); my treble clef version (I also play guitar) is well hammered and much loved.

If you are a bass player (or anyone else for that matter with good taste) and want to see/hear a bass player using Parker's vocabulary check out Dario Deidda, start at youtube. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that!)

Outstanding book, but you should buy the newer edition, not this version

All of the reviews on this book are generally consistent in their praise for the book and the authors. I do not have any points to add to the discussion other than this:

It is a credit to this version of Statistics for Experimenters that it has remained relevant throughout the years as a classic introductory text that has kept selling consistently since it was released in the 1970's. Nevertheless, unless you have a particular reason for purchasing this version, you should purchase the updated version(also available through Amazon).

The full title of the newer edition is:

Statistics for Experimenters: Design, Innovation, and Discovery, 2nd Edition

The 2nd edition, written in the same engaging and readable style as the 1st, contains virtually all of the content of the 1st edition plus advances in design of experiments that have happened since the 1st edition was published.

Immediate usability in practice.

This is an excellently written book with clear examples of how to apply statistics to everyday experimental settings. Box delves deep enough into the underlying theory to give an engineer such as myself an appreciation for the "reality" of the mathematics, but sticks to concrete examples and putting theory into practice. Each chapter follows the previous one, but each is also reasonably self-contained. Terminology is easily clarified with a quick use of the comprehensive index.
Additionally, don't let the print date fool you... the book is timely.

classic text on design, well presented

This book was published in 1978 but as other reviewers have noted its practical methods and advice are timeless. George Box and Stu Hunter are both very famous statisticians who are also great teachers and lecturers. Bill Hunter is now deceased. All three authors have made major contributions to the design of experiments. The book is written for practitioners and in the simplest language possible. Emphasis is placed on practical designs and not optimal designs because optimal designs are very sensitive to model specification.
It does not include the robust designs of Taguchi which came later and could easily be included if the authors choose to revise it.

About the Author
William P. Fox is a professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Previously; he was an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of operations research while serving in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA) for more than 12 years. He also served as the Chair of Mathematics at Francis Marion University for eight years before coming to the Naval Postgraduate School. Dr. Fox has taught a variety of mathematics courses in his career, and his areas of interest include mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, and simulations. He holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. from Clemson University.

Great intro to Maple and full of wonderful examples!

Great book! Just wish the author had included a chapter on partial differential equations. But really an excellent book, I love it. Highly recommended.

Terribly edited book

I purchased the Kindle version of this book as it is required for a mathematical modeling course that I am taking this semester and the ebook version was less expensive. With every section, we are finding typo after typo in both the Kindle and printed versions. The latest example is in section 3.5, under SIR models. The equation used in the text is 5 = a*I(n)*S(n) = a(3)*(995), which doesn't make any sense. It should be 5 = a*I(n)*S(n) = a(3)*(997). What's even worse is that the Kindle version doesn't even have page numbers! What genius decided on that?

Important insights, wrong world view.

First let me say that this book offers an important message about the importance of fathers and the psychological problems caused by their absence. The author's approach is Jungian and this is an excellent book to learn true Jungian psychology. I agree with the book on many points when it comes to the men and what they need. I have gained much from his insight. I recommend the book for that purpose, but want to offers some severe cautions. First, the author seems to worship the gods of Greek mythology. Second, the author is anti-Christian. Third, he seems to have a political agenda that follows a very liberal course at times. Because of these things, I would give the book a 2.5 stars. However, the strengths of this book make it worth reading. It will cause men to reflect on what it means to really be a man in today's world. It is too bad that the author is not a Christian that recognizes that Jesus is the true model of a man. When you eat fish it has meat that is good and you eat around the bones or spit them out. That is what you have to do with this book.

The most important book in my life

This book was the turning point of my life when I realized why I am who I am. It opened a window from where I was able to view my past life like never before. The rich clinical experience and the deep understanding of the patients by the author make this book invaluable to any son who had difficult relationship with his father. To the person from Europe who rated the book poorly: Isn't the Bible supposed to provide you so called Christians all the answers for anything you want? Why even bother reading any other book?

This edited volume arose from an international workshop convened in 2006 by Feldman and Turda with Tudor Georgescu, supported by Routledge, and the universities of Oxford, Brookes, Northampton and CEU (Budapest). As the field of fascist studies continues to integrate more fully into pan-European studies of the twentieth century, and given the increasing importance of secular ‘political religion’ as a taxonomic tool for understanding such revolutionary movements, this collection of essays considers the intersection between institutional Christian faiths, theology and congregations on the one hand, and fascist ideology on the other.

In light of recent debates concerning the intersecting secularisation of religion and (usually Christian-based) the sacralisation of politics, "Clerical Fascism" in Interwar Europe approaches such conundrums from an alternative perspective: How, in Europe between the wars, did Christian clergy, laity and institutions respond to the rise of national fascist movements? In doing so, this volume provides case studies from the vast majority of European countries with analyses that are both original in intent and comprehensive in scope. In dealing with the relationship of various interwar fascist movements and their respective national religious institutions, this edited collection promises to significantly contribute to relevant academic historiographies; and as such, will appeal to a wide readership.

The original version of this paper, completed in December 1995, was condensed by Williamson Murray, editor of Brassey’s Mershon American Defense Annual, for the 1996–1997 edition. This condensation did not include three entire sections that are part of this present study (chapter 3 on Scharnhorst’s influence, chapter 6 on strategic surprise, and chapter 9, which contained air combat data bearing on the role of friction in future war). Dr. Murray also cut significant parts of other sections, especially in chapter 10, and precipitated a fair amount of rewriting as he and I worked toward a version that met his length constraint but still reflected the essence of the original paper. While this process led to many textual improvements, it did not generate any substantive changes.

Good analysis

Proponents of the American Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) have argued it will reduce or eliminate the fog and friction of war. Watts wants to examine whether or not those concepts will succumb to technologically driven change, or are there aspects of fog and friction that technology can only marginally affect?

Watts comes to three conclusions:

1. That friction has built-in or structural features that technology can only marginally affect;

2. whether one side or the other can reduce friction via technology, "is less important than whether such advances facilitate being able to shift the RELATIVE balance of friction between opponents more in one's favor; and

3. bringing Clausewitz's concepts up-to-date, "is a useful step toward better understanding its likely role in future war regardless of what one may conclude about the possibility of either side largely eliminating its frictional impediments." (p. 4-5)

Watts argues that there is good reason to believe that introducing information technologies into future war will not eliminate fog and friction, but, "will simply give rise to new and unexpected manifestations." (p. 128)

One of Watt's significant conclusions is that, "it is the DIFFERENTIAL between two sides' levels of general friction that matters in combat outcomes. If what counts in real war is not the absolute level of friction that either side experiences but the RELATIVE FRICTIONAL ADVANTAGE of one adversary over the other, then the question of using technology to reduce friendly friction to near zero can be seen for what it is: a false issue that diverts attention from the real business of war." (p. 132)
