For a college level textbook, it could be better. Some of the answers are actually wrong so it's bar to tell if I did a problem correctly or not. It also has some errors in the chapters.

Excellent Chemistry Textbook

I bought this book as the textbook for my first chemistry class in college (I'm a chemistry major, so it's the first of many). I had taken chemistry in high school, but that had been two years earlier. This book was just the right step up from my high school class, but I think that it would also be easy to understand for someone who has not taken the subject before. It's well laid out and explains topics well before moving on. One feature that I really appreciate is that when it brings up a topic that hasn't been discussed for awhile, it gives the chapter and section so that you can look it up again. Overall, I think that Atoms First is an excellent textbook for students who are new or fairly new to the field of chemistry.

80's edition

I used this book during college (in 1984), and enjoyed it very much. Martindale does a good job connecting or contrasting the many different theorists by their phylosophical view points and schools of thought. The section on classical theorists was better reading than that of contemporary theorists. Contemporary theorists, and their theories, seem to ramble on and on incoherently as if the theorists were either insane or just on a bad acid trip. It's at this point that they appear to try too hard to out do each other with their complex ramblings over minor issues that have already been clearly explained by earlier classical theorists. I also enjoyed the book because it contained photos of the theorists. I was upset that my wife threw this book away which now causes me to buy it at an increased price in 2003.

New texts don't even come close

This book does such an excellent job of examining classical social theory that it puts current texts to shame. Im willing to bet that the breadth of topics covered here is not duplicated in current texts. I guess the only thing really lacking here would be some of the post-modern/post-positivism writers. Im also guessing you could get a copy of this book for much less than the price listed here. The editions (im guessing again) are all very similar. Buy this book!
