About the Author

David Rieske is an industrial engineer and has worked in manufacturing in the areas of production and health and safety. During this time, he gained valuable experience in the identification and reduction/elimination of hazards through engineering applications. David teaches at the University of Arkansas while also working in the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. C. Ray Asfahl is Emeritus Professor of Industrial Engineering at University of Arkansas. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Safety Professional. With over 35 years experience in Industrial Safety he has served as Industrial Consultant in most of the 50 states. He has served on the Standards Development Committee of the American Society of Safety Engineers. His books, in seven editions in English, are in use throughout the world. Some editions of his books have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Korean.

Looks good on a shelf

I bought this as a text. Not bad but not the best either; you'd be better off finding a current year review of the laws as specific for the state that you are doing the work in through a professional safety publishing company. The material on the CD is a waste.

Not much use

I read this book with a specific purpose, and it failed to deliver. I had perused a sample before buying, and had reservations but still proceeded with the purchase as the price is quite cheap. Not a good use of time and money as far as I am concerned, mainly for 3 reasons.
First, contrary to what the title suggests, the method proposed here is directly based on the age-old "loci" system ("memory palace"), without any significant adaptation tailored to Arabic.
Second, the book contains no decent analysis - like the number of words you should target, or the consequence of the 3-letter root system and derivation. I discovered somewhere in the middle of the book that the author knows probably about as many words as me. He has 28 "memory palaces", and states his largest have more than 100 words. So I'd bet his vocabulary is in the 1500-2000 range, like mine. I am struggling to double it, as proficiency typically means more than 3000 words, in most languages.
Third and most puzzling to me, the method proposes to learn words in alphabetic order of the target language. After studying half a dozen languages including English as a foreign language, I am yet to see any student achieve even a basic conversation level that way. Many sources document the value of learning "production" (from your native language to your target language), rather than "recognition" - especially with the alphabetic order.
The loci system and other technics such as mental images are fantastic. However you can find other references explaining them better and in a nicer prose. Hence the rating of 1 star.

A good read for anyone interested learning, langauge learning, and arabic learning.

Anthony Metriever gives us a clear plan, that is easy to understand and easy to follow for how to take us from knowing no Arabic and nothing about learning techniques or mnemonics to learn enough vocabulary to speak fluently.

The plan includes mind hacks like memory palace (Which is described in a way that someone who has never heard of it before could understand it) which is famous from for example Sherlock Holmes and The Mentalist to learn vocabulary without boring and ineffective rote learning, and some simple advice for relaxing.

It was an engaging read, and I'd definately recommend it to any friend who's interested in langauge learning, or specifically, Arabic learning.

I regret spending actual money on this 'book'. Writer obviously have no idea about arabic, he has no idea how to use it, or even how to pronounce letters ('it sounds to me like...'). He used half of the space to promote himself. I feel sad when I think that he makes money on selling unscientific persona-marketing without even knowing what is the topic of his own book. It just hurts real people of language studies. And he has a temper to push everywhere fake-looking positive opinions.

I rate it 'S' for SCUM.

MUST HAVE

I graduated college with a 3.2 GPA. I was a hard working and loved nursing. I took a Kaplan course the week after I graduated. I did 1,000s of question on Kaplan. Took my test- 265 question and failed! I was crushed. Used Kaplan again. studied hard. test #2, 143 questions, failed. At a loss, I bought a Lippincott book. Had only Q&A, no content. Did over 1/2 the book and took the test again. test #3, 265 questions and failed.

At a complete loss, I researched what i should do. I was certain i was never going to pass. I was studying so hard and could not seem to pass the test. I bought this book on amazon and fell in love with it from the very beginning. Each chapter had 10-30 pages of content and then questions pertaining to the content at the end of the chapter. The cd has 1,000s of questions, tests, and practice questions.

I walked into the test last week, extremely nervous. Having finished this entire book, I knew there was nothing more i could have done. I started the test, hoping for 265 questions again, as i thought that was the only hope i had of passing. You cannot even imagine my surprise when the computer shut off at 75! I was beyond shocked! I cried there in the testing center! Then went home and waited 2 days. I was shaking when i logged on to see! AND I PASSED! i am 100% sure that this book is the reason I passed. I am so grateful i found this book! A must buy!

The ONLY NCLEX Review You Really Need!

I purchased the 4th edition of this book about a year ago, and started using it in earnest about four weeks before the boards. The chapters that specifically discussed the exam structure, and how to truly "read" each NCLEX question, were essential. The content review chapters (the bulk of the book) were brief but comprehensive. The questions at the end of each of those chapters provided thorough rationales for the correct answers, as well as reasons why the incorrect answers were just that.
The accompanying CD provided valuable feedback regarding areas of strength and weakness. While it is good to have as many practice questions thrown at you as possible in book form, the CD challenges you in the way you will be tested; i.e., on the computer. So when the big day comes, you will be ready for the style of the NCLEX as well as its substance.
Two quick tips regarding the boards: 1) Schedule them for a time of day when you are at your best. If you are not a morning person, late morning or early afternoon test times will probably work better for you. 2) Study thoroughly, but it is better to finish your studies two days before the exam. Give yourself the day before to clear your head and relax (yeah, right!) on the eve of the boards. If you do not know the material by then, you are probably not going to learn it the day before.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I passed my boards at 92 questions, thanks in no small part to Ms. Silvestri's book. Many thanks to her, and best of luck to all of the soon-to-be nurses.

A Must Have for the NCLEX

This is a good book to review all the material comprehensively after completing nursing school and studying for the NCLEX. I would find it difficult to memorize this material straight from the book; without having learned it before. What is it good for? During nursing school, this book will summarize what you REALLY need to know about disease conditions and how to perform procedures and such. Its the short version. But if you want in-depth details you need to go to the book.

What's it good for on NCLEX? This book helped me to see the material I learned from in NCLEX perspective and helped give me a mindset for what to look for. After taking the NCLEX I can say this book DEFINITELY helped me on most questions to say --- that's DEFINITELY the answer. I believe it helped me see right through NCLEX's hidden topics within the question.

I breezed through NCLEX first time with 4 days of studying after graduation in 85 questions.

So how do I know it works? (I only had 4 days to study because of a family event that happened.... but in those 4 days I read this book from 7am-1am the next day for 3 1/2 days; I read the ENTIRE book). I also used it during nursing school and made a 3.72 GPA; this book was awesome and I always recommended it to others.

The book gave me the REVIEW I needed. Because I'll be honest, there's a LOT I had forgotten that I covered within the past year of nursing school. This book brought me up to date on all the specific conditions and treatments within just 3 1/2 days.

So anyway. It did its job. And again, to those in nursing school: the details ARE important and you won't gain understanding of the BIG concepts through this book. You learn that in school. This is a review. Not a substitute for messing around in nursing school for 2 years and then deciding you want to learn the material to pass NCLEX.

Andy Hector, Professor of Ecology, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford

Andy Hector is Professor of Ecology in the University of Oxford's Department of Plant Sciences. He currently convenes and teaches statistics on the Quantitative Methods for Biologists course for undergraduates. He is a community ecologist interested in biodiversity loss and its consequences for ecosystem functioning, stability and services and scientific PI of the Sabah Biodiversity Experiment. He has contributed to several publications on ecological analysis.

Conceptually good but difficult to follow and not worth the price since a lot of the R code has NOT been tested and does NOT work - from both the book and the supplied scripts on the companion website. Recommend any Michael Crawly or Andy Field R book since these authors write clearly and provide excellent R code that works!

Ignoring the numerous typos in both example code and text, this book is still close to worthless. It claims to somehow provide an introduction to statistics with examples performed using R; however the reader - regardless of prior knowledge of statistics and/or R - will walk away with neither.

In April 1861 war was declared between the Union and the Confederacy.

When the news came it made Fletcher nervous, as he was working but didn’t want to miss his chance to enlist; reaching an agreement, he began his journey the following day.

Two years later, on the third day at Gettysburg, Fletcher recalls how he became temporarily afflicted with a “bad case of cowardly horror” following the order to prepare to charge.

But Fletcher could also be a restless man and was brave to a fault, frequently seeking permission for dangerous raids or patrols in the lulls between battles.

Wounded on numerous occasions, Fletcher became incapacitated for further infantry service and was transferred to the cavalry, where he would serve for the rest of the war.

It was during this time that he was taken prisoner by Union troops, and Fletcher’s account of his capture, and the formation and execution of his escape plan is worthy of a classic thriller.

With its combination of straightforward prose and unexpected philosophising, Rebel Private is an arresting account of one line soldier’s experience.

William Andrew Fletcher (1839-1915) was a lumberman, scout and soldier from Louisiana. In 1856 the family moved to Texas, and five years later he enlisted in the Confederate Army. Serving throughout the Civil War, he survived and returned to Texas, where he later married and raised a family.

William Fletcher joined the Confederate Army in 1861. He served with the Army of Northern Virginia's elite Texas Brigade until the Battle of Chickamauga. Unable to march because of wounds, he transferred to the cavalry and finished the war with the Texas Rangers, then wrote his memoirs 40 years later. Most of the original copies were destroyed in a fire. The current edition presents unvarnished images of hard marches, short rations and battles in which being wounded could prove worse than being killed. Fletcher describes the horrors of being a Civil War casualty as vividly as any firsthand account from either side. The author emerges from these pages as fighting less for a cause than for his own pride in being a good soldier. His narrative does more than many learned monographs to explain the Confederacy's long endurance against overwhelming odds.

About the Author
Richard Wheeler, an ex-marine, is the author of sixteen other books of military history, eleven of which deal with different Civil War campaigns and battles, including Voices of the Civil War, winner of the New York City Civil War Round Table's Fletcher Pratt Award. Wheeler is also the author of Voices of 1776: The Story of the American Revolution in the Words of Those Who Were There (Meridian). He lives in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania.

One of the best 10 first hand accounts of the war

Just as compelling as "Co.Aych", this would make an incredible movie. That is certainly one of the reasons it is found on so many bookstore shelves. It does not receive the attention it deserves because, like every other book of its kind written as a participant, it deflates slavery aa a possible motive for fighting. This is the adventure if one tough, daring, funny young rebel whose brawn, wits and insticts got him through the WBTS alive. The business of jumping off a POW train seemed more like something out of an Indiana Jones adventure. If he'd worn the "blue" he'd be in every textbook. Tired of other writers interpretations and want to go to the well for yourself? This is a great place to start.

Excellent Source for the Common Soldier

One of the best CW books I have read to date. Fletcher's experiences reflects the true hardships and nastiness of war. Excellently written in a first person format. Mr. Fletcher seemed to be a level headed and unbiased man, and his book showcases this.

THIS ONE NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR COLLECTION

Excellent, first had observations made by a common private in during the Civil War. The author IS NOT a professional writer. This makes it all the more valuable. The author is not writing the book to entertain, or to pass along old, gory war stories. This is a story by a simple man trying to tell us his point of view, simple as that. This account is quite valuable to anyone interested in the study of this horrible conflict. Recommend it's reading and recommend you add it to your collection. I do wish there had been more like this one.
