Understanding Aerodynamics: Arguing from the Real Physics, by Doug McLean

Much-needed, fresh approach that brings a greater insight into the physical understanding of aerodynamics

Based on the author’s decades of industrial experience with Boeing, this book helps students and practicing engineers to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics. Relying on clear physical arguments and examples, Mclean provides a much-needed, fresh approach to this sometimes contentious subject without shying away from addressing "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience. Motivated by the belief that engineering practice is enhanced in the long run by a robust understanding of the basics as well as real cause-and-effect relationships that lie behind the theory, he provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations, and building upon the contrasts provided by wrong explanations to strengthen understanding of the right ones.

  • Provides a refreshing view of aerodynamics that is based on the author’s decades of industrial experience yet is always tied to basic fundamentals.
  • Provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations
  • Offers new insights to some familiar topics, for example, what the Biot-Savart law really means and why it causes so much confusion, what “Reynolds number” and “incompressible flow” really mean, and a real physical explanation for how an airfoil produces lift.
  • Addresses "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience, and omits mathematical details whenever the physical understanding can be conveyed without them.

Review

“As someone who has been involved with aerodynamics for more years than I care to remember, I have rarely come across a book that is so readable and that provides so many (to me a least) genuinely new insights into the subject and its applications.   This book should be high on the wish list of any practising aerodynamicist, whether in industry or academia.”  (Aeronautical Journal, 1 August 2013)

“This is a sophisticated book for people immersed in the study of fluid dynamics and aerodynamics; it will give them in-depth knowledge of both the physical phenomena and the mathematical equations that are used to describe and predict these phenomena. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students in aerospace engineering, researchers/faculty, and aircraft design professionals.”  (Choice, 1 July 2013)

From the Back Cover

A real understanding of aerodynamics must go beyond mastering the mathematical formalism of the theories and come to grips with the physical cause-and-effect relationships that the theories represent. In addition to the math, which applies most directly at the local level, intuitive physical interpretations and explanations are required if we are to understand what happens at the flowfield level. This book aims to promote such physical understanding.

Understanding Aerodynamics: Arguing from the Real Physics provides a more thorough review of the physical underpinnings of fluid mechanics than is typical of conventional aerodynamics books, and it covers topics specific to aerodynamics with greater physical rigor. Many of the discussions and explanations in the book are novel in the sense that they attempt to remedy incompleteness or inconsistencies in previously available sources. Examples include the discussion of how aerodynamics fits in with modern physical theory in general, the explanations and discussions of the "induction" fallacy, the effect of surface roughness on turbulent skin friction, the basic mechanism for the lift on an airfoil, and the global pressure and momentum-flux balances in the flowfield around a lifting 3D wing.

This book provides:

  • An understanding of what the equations and theories of aerodynamics really mean
  • Real physical explanations for aerodynamic phenomena such as lift
  • Discussions of important topics that are often missing in other aerodynamics books, such a three-dimensional flow in boundary layers
  • A broad view of the field and how it all fits together

Understanding Aerodynamics: Arguing from the Real Physics meticulously captures the results of the author's decades of pondering, discussing, and arguing the physical aspects of aerodynamic flows and is sure to help practicing engineers, as well as students, to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics.

A New Approach
By Russell Cummings
Understanding Aerodynamics is a new approach at explaining why various aerodynamic characteristics take place. Most aerodynamics textbooks use experimental data and theoretical developments to explain aerodynamics, but there are very few equations or theories developed here. The basis is an understanding of the physical mechanisms that lead to lift and drag, which is a refreshing and important contribution. The downside is that the author tends to throw out many classic theories because they can't explain all details of aerodynamics: my response to that is to quote the well-used statement "all theories are wrong, but some are useful." Just because a theory isn't perfect (and none of them are) doesn't mean the theory can't be useful and important. What the author should concentrate on, perhaps, is that we should never confuse our theories with reality, and I think that is an important contribution.

must read for those in the field
By Ding
Too often aerodynamics has been treated as applied mathematics. This is akin to force the learning of English by committing to memory English grammar rules that the vast majority of native speakers never think about. This has an effect of discouraging anyone but the most unusual students.

This book, along with Ed Obert's Aerodynamic design of transport airplane, published in 2009, are important and refreshing in that both are highly informative but not math heavy. Obert's book is one of experience. McLean's book, however, tackles the theory of aerodynamics from a physical point of view. It enhances your understanding of the fundamentals, which is a necessary part of an aerodynamicist's know-how. Only by combining a strong background in theory and all-around experience can an aerodynamicist hope to function in today's highly competitive aircraft manufacturing business.

I sincerely recommend this book to people who have long lost hope in a pure mathematical and lifeless approach.

Very in-depth discussion of the complex interactions in aerodynamics. Difficult to verbalize this subject but Doug McLean does a commendable job!

The Last Living Slut: Born in Iran, Bred Backstage, by Roxana Shirazi

The Last Living Slut is the salaciously literary and sexually liberated account of one young woman’s transition from traditionally-raised Iranian to rock and roll groupie for Guns N Roses, Motley Crew, and many others. Paired with a powerful introduction by New York Times bestselling authors Neil Strauss and Anthony Bozza, Roxana Shirazi’s The Last Living Slut is a passionate tale of jilted love, brutal revenge, and backstage encounters that make Pamela Des Barres’s I’m With The Band read like the diary of a nun.

From Publishers Weekly
Aghast readers may lose track of Shirazi's rock star conquests, but her shocking sexual exploits are chronicled in such can't-look-away prose that it's impossible to close this X-rated book until the last bad boy has been put to bed. While the author's explicit descriptions of backstage orgies, threesomes, and random hookups might make even the most world-wise readers blush, memoirs like this are rarely written with such edgy prose. Shirazi, who fled the Iranian revolution, barely hints at trauma caused by early sexual and physical abuse. But when it comes to accounts of rock stars' sexual proclivities, she doesn't hold back. Even as she pursues a Master's degree in English, Shirazi trysts with members, or hangers-on, of Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, and assorted has-beens of the '80s hair-band scene still clinging to their former glory. But when the author allows herself to fall in love, her memoir takes a turn that proves disastrous in myriad ways, rubbing much of the sexy veneer off of her shenanigans. Though ultimately, no matter how readers judge her salacious life, no one can deny that she has a raw talent with words. Photos.

From Booklist
After Ayatollah Khomeini came to power in Iran, Shirazi’s family immigrated to London. Bullied by her classmates and beaten by her stepfather, she fell hard for rock ’n’ roll and embarked on a splintered existence that saw her studying at university while attending rock concerts with the express purpose of bedding musicians, among them members of Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. Shirazi makes no bones about her passion for operating in “full sleaze mode” and of the pleasure she took in outfitting herself in stilettos and corsets. What tripped her up was her attempt to extract love and reassurance from her sexcapades. An abortion and a bad breakup left her in desperate straits; out to wield some power, she slept with two feuding members of the same band, causing a bartender to accuse her, in all seriousness, of being the “Yoko Ono for Hookers N’ Blow.” Shirazi gave up the life when she realized that even supposedly liberated rockers employ a sexual double standard. Far raunchier and better written than Pamela Des Barres’ classic I’m with the Band (1987). --Joanne Wilkinson

More sad than sexy.
By Amazon Customer
I just finished this book, and it was a quick and easy read compared to what I normally read. As a child of the 80's metal hair bands myself--and a huge music fan, I was curious. I have personally been invited backstage for many concerts during that era (I looked like a tart when I was 16) scouted by road managers asking 'do you want to meet the band?' . Only to immediately protest that I was only a fan, and that I had to be at school in the morning--the moment I'd get backstage. Great White, twisted sister, iron maiden, judas priest...met them all at the height of their popularity. Yet, while my appearance stated otherwise...I would never have dreamed of sleeping with anyone in the bands I met. Therefore, I felt like reading this book would present the other side of the coin. What would life for me have been like if I had? Roxanna was someone not unlike myself, and yet she was on the dark side. I thought this was her memoir of a misspent youth chasing rockstars in their glory days. What a let down. This is about very recent history...of a woman willing to degrade herself in every conceivable way for washed up rockstars whose light faded decades ago. Her defiant 'slut and proud' mantra was not at all convincing, but rather hollow and sad. She was desperate for love, affection and attention, which it seems she has still not achieved to this date. I loved reading about her childhood in Tehran, and her relationship with her family....but little of her relationship with her family was explored in her 'slut' years. Did they know how promiscuous she was? Her bi-sexuality and multiple sex partner (often at the same time). Well...they sure know now! How did they feel about it? Her younger siblings? She explained she lived a double-life, but then suddenly she was telling her mom about her pregnancy from a lowlife rocker and impending abortion. Other than a sentence about her mom complaining that the men she dated being beneath her, there was no other feedback. There was an opportunity there to bring the story from her beginnings in Tehran, the molestations, the groupie life and then Mum into a full loop. I also take issue with her protection of this hypocritical politician who was a slime bucket, while freely throwing the names of the band members. Seems hypocritical on her part to me.

I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. It was a page turner...but it ultimately disappointed me with it's lack of sincerity and sad message.

Little common sense and lots of drugs
By B
There are things in this story that simply don't add up. For example, spoiler alert, the book starts with Nikki sixx taking Shirazi and a friend out on a date, and when sixx mentions his interest in gardening, shirazi draws a blank. How is it possible for someone who was pursuing academic as a second passion next to sex to be so bland and blah ? In a sense the " I'm with the band" and " groupie " life style is like the life style of a geisha, except you choose the man. The book gives you the vibe that shirazi was waiting for one of her rock stars to fall in love with her and sweep her off her feet. One can't help but wonder, the reason it didn't happen was because of the fact that her whole life was based on sex. No common sense, no conversation, no knowledge of anything but he sleaze rock scene. Another spoiler, she has unprotected sex with dizzy reed on their second date. I'm quite sure there has got to be a rule in the groupie handbook about having protected sex and importance of it, for reasons like STDs and AIDS. On and all, I felt bad for shirazi. She is snobby towards the older groupies who really have to fight the younger ones to appeal to rock stars, when in fact she is turning into one of them. It is a good fluff read for say a bus stop or waiting in line at the grocery store ( I have it on kindle so it's easier ), but there is nothing interesting about this book.this is the tale of a. Unsuccessful groupie.

As Disappointing as Shirazi's Life of Humping Fallen Stars in Monotonous Succession
By Sunday Chan
Roxana Shirazi's The Last Living Slut is a pathetic portrait of both groupie and group. The has-been rock stars come off as callous, and the never-beens as (understandably) bitter. Shirazi tries hard, a bit too hard, to paint herself as the ultimate hedonist: her fond reminiscences of flirting with boys and masturbating with a stick at the tender age of four had me rolling my eyes. Her assertion that she kind of enjoyed being fondled by a pervy old man as a child is stomach-turning.

Shirazi's description of her double life - pursuing her advanced degree in literature by day, bedding down with hair metal bands at night - is a refreshing change from the usual groupie tale. She may be eager for a taste of fame from the lips of the likes of Axl Rose (or the overwhelmingly less-famous Dizzy Reed), but she isn't planning on riding on anyone's coattails to the top. She'd rather ride on something else...

The dirty details of the riding are nicely balanced with raw accounts of loss and heartache.

Despite her eloquence, openness and apparent genuine caring for other groupies in her circle, Shirazi comes across as self-centred and unlikeable. Her tendency to lapse into poetically overwrought descriptions, particularly towards the end of the book, is also off-putting.

The book is structured like a coming-of-age story, but one neither feels like the author has truly matured at the end, nor had any innocence to begin with.

The Last Living Slut is disappointing, as disappointing as Shirazi's life of humping fallen stars in monotonous succession.

For the lover in you!
By LaBellaEsq
I've read both of the poetry books written by this author. Both are undoubtedly filled with Christian love, the kind that makes even a non believer like myself understand fully what Agape Love stands for. While you can see the author’s faith in God as her Creator and the ultimate source of love in her writings, she fortunately doesn't come across as preachy or judgmental allowing you to relate to her love and tragedies as a human. In conclusion, I recommend both books in this series, Poetry in Infancy to anyone who believes in love, is passionate about love, or even needs a reminder that true love does exist even through life’s storms.

Teach Yourself Visually books in general are my favorite ways to learn software
By Mark A. Baron
Teach Yourself Visually books in general are my favorite ways to learn software. They show you step-by-step how to accomplish whatever task you want to do with the program. Even more interesting is that ALL the screenshots are in color, as opposed to the black and white that many books use. I have always liked this aspect to this series.s For the QuickBooks book specifically, it has already saved me time. I use this program regularly for recording things in the check register. There are a couple other tasks that I use occasionally, but rarely. Each time, I have to slowly review menu list by menu list, to figure out how to do what I need to accomplish. With this book, I found the page (describing what to do) literally in ten seconds. And with the step-by-step instructions, it demonstrated exactly what to do. I wish I had this book several years ago when I first started using QuickBooks.

A great task-based, instructional book for the visual learners
By Amazon Customer
Teach Yourself Visually QuickBooks 2015 is a quick instructional guide that shows you the how to perform various tasks in QuickBooks without the long winded explanations and technical details. The book covers important topics over 15 chapters, ranging from getting started in the software, invoicing, customers and vendors, payroll, taxes, time/mileage tracking, recording payments to managing bills and bank accounts. These topics are thoughtfully broken into 2-page modular lessons that are designed to walk you through step by step, complemented visually by full-color screenshots and illustrations. It's a great way to learn how to use a specific feature of the software quickly, without getting bogged down by technical backgrounds and explanations.

The book does a good job of getting the readers started in actually performing a specific task in no time. If you are a visual learner or like to follow step-by-step instructions without all the details, this book is a great guide for you. One caveat though. It doesn't distinguish between the different editions of QuickBooks 2015 and whether certain lessons may be applicable.

Great for a quick reference in color
By justtrischa
I just received this book (soft cover) from Amazon and all of the pages are cut off on the right side of the book.
Looks very strange, not like the "Look Inside" preview pages shown on the website.
I intend to return this to Amazon and try again.

On a positve note, it is in color and from what I can see, looks helpful.
------------------------
Reviewer Update: I upgraded this from the original 3 star rating to 5 stars.
Amazon quickly accepted my exchange request and made it easy for me to return the misprinted book via UPS.
The second copy I received looks good. It's all in color.
The screenshots are accurate to the Quickbooks program.
The book is a good, quick reference for "how to", but it's not a comprehensive tutorial package for beginners.

Review
A funny novel about sex, or rather (which is rarer) a novel which is funny as well as touching about sex ... elegant, exact and melodious -- Isabel Quigly Sunday Telegraph The delicious adventures of a young Casanova who appreciates maturity while acquiring it himself. In turn naive, sophisticated, arrogant, disarming, the narrator woos his women and his tale wins the reader -- Polly Devlin Vogue Spectacular! It's always a risky business, re-reading a book which was important to you in your adolescence. But re-reading this one, I was struck by a great deal that I missed before ... a much richer book than I remembered. Immensely pleasurable. -- A. A. Gill (2010) A skinny book with a funny name, a title I didn't know, by an author I'd never heard of, which turns out to be just wonderful -- John Self (2010) theasylum.wordpress.com In Praise of Older Women is as singular as a lemon tree or a giraffe or a ripe pear.In a voice free of vanity and subterfuge, the writer tells a story of the worst of times, and the ever-shifting truths about girls and youths, men and women and their sexual connections--and mis-connections--in a way that is always luminous and enlightening. "The best summing-up of In Praise of Older Women was given in the London Sunday Citizen: Vizinczey really knows, and Henry Miller and the rest - even D H Lawrence - only thought they did. His knowledge extends to all fields, including the literary one... The novel has a dynamism which is defined by one of its own phrases: Havent you heard of Einsteins law? Pleasure turns into energy." -- Clara Janés, El País (Madrid) This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"A funny novel about sex, or rather (which is rarer) a novel which is funny as well as touching about sex... elegant, exact and melodious - has style, presence and individuality." Isabel Quigly, Sunday Telegraph

"Erotic situations, games, frustrations, naive miscalculations, humiliations, joyful and tearful pleasures... Vizinczey never exaggerates, he writes with clear detachment not devoid of irony:his graceful and suggestive style frees us from the anguish that love often brings with it. A little masterpiece in which sex is knowledge and good literature." -- Maria Dols, Ajoblanco (Barcelona)This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"An erotic classic of subtle complexity, humour and wit. An invitation to the experience of love, to adventure. But it is also the portrait of someone who is familiar to us from family stories, someone we have all known at some time. And perhaps Vizinczey's great success is owing to this, and to his style, which is so unaffected, so natural and at the same time so perfectly exact." Menene Gras Balaguer, La Vanguardia (Barcelona) This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"Full of wisdom and irony, with a shot of heart's blood and a drop of melancholy added. A tribute to women as well as the portrait of an age which has been irrevocably lost. A book that caresses the heart and soul, without becoming sentimental." Bernd Lubowski, Berliner Morgen Post This refers to the German edition of the novel

"The delicious adventures of a young Casanova who appreciates maturity while acquiring it himself. In turn naive, sophisticated, arrogant, disarming, the narrator woos his women and his tale wins the reader." Polly Devlin, Vogue

Better insights into Canadians than women
By D. P. Birkett
It is a coming of age novel, that is to say a thinly disguised autobiography which, in the male version, always describes a sensitive youth growing up in a hostile environment where his gifts are not appreciated, having a series of affairs with women, and ending up a sadder and wiser man, usually a university teacher. Such plots are necessarily thin and the descriptions of amatory conquests become repetitious. The scenes of life in wartorn and communist Hungary, and what it is like to be a refugee are interesting. He nails Canada. The "older" women are, in fact, seldom as much as ten years older than the protagonist - none is over 40. I think in its day the sex descriptions were shocking. The female characters do not, to me, emerge as three-dimensional. Some of them are tragic and worn-down and poverty-stricken but they all want one thing and the hero is kind enough to give it to them. I think that in the year 2000 his view of women is demeaning.

Captivating
By Marisa
I first wanted to read this book when I was in high school, however, my mother would not allow it. Stephen Vizinczey is a cousin of my father's and that is how I arrived at an interest in his work. After reading the book, now at the age of 28, I can understand why my mother would not allow me to read it at such a young age. The book revels in a young man's quest of sexual experiences and learnings with the opposite sex. It is not detailed in the sense of a steamy harlequin (thank goodness!). Instead, the book entails more of an open aired and very tasteful approach to the combined meaning of sex, relationships, and life. I disagree with some of the other reviews which regard the book as what it is like to be a young male in hungarian nationality. The book begins in that part of the world, however, being a first generation American from Hungarian descent, I believe that this book is true to the male species in any culture. The book is amusing and light hearted and is a must read no matter where you are from.

Some Observations on In Praise of Older Women
By A Customer
I have just read In Praise of Older Women for the second time. Many reviewers have drawn attention to the wisdom contained in this little book, which slyly presents itself as a breviary for young men without lovers. I am reluctant to insist on its status as "an erotic classic," for fear that to do so would confine it to a very narrow context. Indeed, the erotic scenes do not constitute the heart and soul of the story, nor do they even take up very much room. Rather, the book brings some very subtle psychological observations to bear on human relationships. Note, for example, the analysis of the "rapport des forces" between the older women and the younger hero. Zsuzsa, a "small, colourless woman," struggles to overcome her pride. Her coyness turns to compliance only when Vajda snaps at her, showing his passion (one recalls a scene in The Red and the Black: playing for somewhat higher stakes that Vajda, Julien tears a sword from the wall, imprudently displaying his passion before Mathilde, who briefly sees that he loves her). Other women aim stinging remarks at the young man only to succumb to his advances; or else they are guarded and surly the morning after, suspicious (and, in many case, rightly so) of the young Don Juan's motives. In another case, it is Vajda who is prideful. In his efforts to keep up with an energetic violinist whose relentless athletic pursuits and strange sleeping habits he takes as a challenge, the poor Casanova wears himself down to the bone. Vajda also writes of the anonymous onanists, versions of Dostoevsky's "underground man," who keep to themselves and satiate their erotic cravings in solitude. These misanthropes belong to the category of men who have not opened themselves up to women, who want to seduce and dominate the opposite sex, unlike Vajda, who looks on women as "accomplices." The book is a very strong and subtle critique of pride. When I think back on its contents, I remember not only the pleasant watercolors of Hungary and Rome, the descriptions of bodies and faces, and the maxims worthy of La Rochefoucauld ("Whatever is sanctioned by society as a principal good also becomes a moral imperative"), but also the wry humor that examines human interaction with sympathy and insight. While desire plays a large role in the recollections of the hero, the extent to which the author soars above his past is quite remarkable. To be invited to partake of his calm gaze is a pleasure worth repeating. One can read this book again without tiring of it.
The book was very well received in France. "Un bain de bonheur" was how one reviewer described it. How to account for its popularity in Europe (the book has been a best-seller in Spain and elsewhere I believe)? It is true that eroticism has been raised to the level of a value in France, which deploys its Catholic moeurs like scud missiles against a monolithic (and not wholly imaginary) American puritanism. Ideology aside, the fact remains that France knows how to appreciate good literature.
I see that the author himself has posted a review translated from the French. Good for him. America should know about the European point of view.

Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged from Matter, by Terrence W. Deacon

“A tour de force encompassing biology, neurobiology, metaphysics, information theory, physics, and semiotics.”―Publishers Weekly

As scientists study the minutiae of subatomic particles, neural connections, and molecular compounds, their attempts at a “theory of everything” harbor a glaring omission: they still cannot explain us, the thoughts and perceptions that truly make us what we are. A masterwork that brings together science and philosophy, Incomplete Nature offers a revolutionary, captivating account of how life and consciousness emerged, revealing how our desires, feelings, and intentions can be understood in terms of the physical world. 12 illustrations

Review
Contains many rewarding thoughts about life and mind and their place in nature. (Nature)

Unprecedentedly comprehensive. . . . Imagine the consequences for science and society of having a physical explanation for functional, meaningful and conscious behavior no less scientific and accessible than our explanation for lightning. I believe Deacon provides just that. (Psychology Today)

In his approach to the question of how sentience emerged from ‘dumb’ and ‘numb’ matter, Mr. Deacon mobilizes some radically new ideas. (Wall Street Journal)

A profound shift in thinking that in magnitude can only be compared with those that followed upon the works of Darwin and Einstein. (Robert E. Ulanowicz, author of A Third Window: Natural Life beyond Newton and Darwin)

This is a work of science and philosophy at the cutting edge of both that seeks to develop a complete theory of the world that includes humans, our minds and culture, embodied and emerging in nature. (Bruce H. Weber, coauthor of Darwinism Evolving)

A stunningly original, stunningly synoptic book. With Autogenesis, Significance, Sentience, seventeen insightful and integrated chapters turn our world upside down and finally, as in the Chinese proverb, lead us home again to a place we see anew. Few ask the important questions. Deacon is one of these. (Stuart Kauffman, author of Investigations)

[Deacon] demonstrates how systems that are intrinsically incomplete happen to be alive and meaning-making. The crux of life―and meaning―is solved. It was worthwhile to wait for this book. The twenty-first century can now really start. (Kalevi Kull, professor, Department of Semiotics, Tartu University)

Mind Did Not Not Emerge
By Sevens
The author talks about - and to some degree - explores self-organization/morphodynamics; he outlines how systems that are (then) far from equilibrium can spontaneously "create themselves" (not a quote). Ever more complex systems pave the way to, are substrates for and mark steps toward life (and mind). Biological cells are pretty complex. To create them, self-sustaining (autocatalytic) systems (constituted by chemical processes) are necessary which need to progress to autogen(ic) status; autogenic status is characterized by the ability of the system (cell) to repair itself and to replicate itself. Essentially, in order to reach the complexity required for life, (gradual) progress has to be made. Each increase in complexity, each increase in sophistication of systems needs to be protected so that it can be build upon. Very much simplified: imagine a self-assembling sandcastle that needs to protect itself against the onslaught of mindless children who are out to destroy it. Mr. Deacon offers concepts for how that could work (not for sandcastles).

However, while he discusses all sorts of things (prominently: complexity theory, self-organization/morphodynamics, thermodynamics, teleodynamics, intentional/ententional [the latter a term he creates] phenomena, information theory and emergence) it does not converge into progress. At least not to me.

Ententional phenomena (elements that are not directly physically represented, such as purpose and thoughts) seem to be what he assigned a fundamental role to. But a focus on that theme is only present in the book's first half and does not amount to a conclusion, to a new insight, to something to work with.

The focus then shifts to constraints. Constraints prevent things. They cause things to not happen, they cause them to remain absent and to only be what (otherwise) could have been. Incidentally they cause/allow for other, alternative things to happen. (Naturally, they play a role in organization/morphodynamics.) I have a feeling that this doesn't sound like much of a great insight. It wasn't to me. I don't see what can - in respect to the emergence of mind/consciousness - be gained through that, allegedly new, perspective. For one thing, constraints are physically there. They aren't absent/absential features. For another thing, defining things negatively (a banana is a fruit that is not any fruit other than a banana) is not a new invention. I do not see anything resembling the paradigm shift and revolution Mr. Deacon postulates (and the publisher advertises).

In my view, this book doesn't revolutionize the concept of emergence; nor does it revolutionize (or particularly further) the understanding of the human mind. It enlightens few things. But it was interesting to read since it addresses interesting topics (of course that's a subjective assessment -- the second paragraph provides a short list, the first paragraph a minimally detailed example). The author's language could be called convoluted. Nonetheless, he remains modest. His insistence on having outlined something astounding is strange. There's a - let's say small - chance that somewhere in his text an idea is encoded and encapsulated that I could not access with my breadth and level of knowledge. In consequence, I plan to read his previous book (The Symbolic Species: The Co-evolution of Language and the Brain) and, through different authors, to further explore the topics he addresses. The impressions described here are based on having read the full book and are strong enough to warrant a review; I will modify and mark it should I arrive at a new/improved understanding. Criticism is welcome.

As Game Changing As Origin Of The Species
By Taowin
If it were a snake it would have bit us. It's sitting right under our noses. It's the unifying insight behind the two biggest breakthrough clues toward solving the biggest remaining scientific mystery. Grateful and greatly encouraged by the breakthrough clues we ran with them, ignoring their underlying and unifying insight, the insight that made them both possible. We ignored the underlying insight until Deacon's book, whose 600 exquisitely reasoned and written pages I'll attempt to summarize here.

The biggest remaining scientific mystery is how to close the explanatory gap between the hard and the soft sciences, between energy and information, between physical forces and living desires, between a values-neutral physio-chemical universe and the values-driven bio-psycho-social universe--in a word, between clockwork physics and ever-game-changing life.

In other words, why can we talk about a living creature's intentions, preferences, desires, appetites, adaptations, functions, and purposes, but not a rock, a planet's, or an atom's? What changed, making information and intention cause matter to behave so differently, the way it most obviously does with life? And precisely how do intentions change things?

The two biggest breakthrough clues are evolutionary theory and information theory, and the overlooked underlying insight is about where to look for what life does differently--not in things themselves but in differences, and in particular differences between behaviors that do and don't persist, differences between what remains present and what becomes absent.

Darwin discovered how differential survival, the proliferation of some lineages and the disappearance and absence of others yielded game-changing adaptations over time. Life doesn't require a creator-thing, or an improver-thing in order to evolve. Instead, it requires a difference between the lineages that stay present and the lineages that become absent.

We have embraced Darwin's breakthrough but haven't embraced what it tells us about where to look to finish solving science's greatest mystery. Instead, we treat differential survival as a creator-thing, for example when we say that natural selection designs a trait. And we treat DNA as an improver-thing, a magically powerful yet merely physio-chemical-thing that improves organisms.

Information theory may be less familiar to you than evolutionary theory but its consequences are everywhere. Pioneered by Claude Shannon, information theory made modern computers possible and gave us such essential and commonplace terms as bit, megabyte and pixel. Shannon, an engineer at Bell Labs came up with a simple functional definition of information, as again, a difference between what remains present and what becomes absent.

Pick a card, any card. Before you pick there are 52 possibilities. After you pick there's one. The step-down from 52 to one--the difference between what could have been picked, and what turned out to be picked is a measure of the amount of information gained in the process. Information is not a thing. It's a narrowing of possibility.

Again, though we ran with Shannon's breakthrough, we ignored its underlying insight. We treat information as a thing in computers, in the bit, the hard drive or the memory chip.

We are very thing-oriented.

We are so thing-oriented that, though it has been over 150 years since thermodynamic theory showed that energy is not a thing but a difference, we still treat energy as a thing. Put a frozen pizza in a hot oven and the temperature difference equalizes. And yet we still talk as though we're pumping some heat-thing into the pizza. We pump an energy-thing into our gas tanks and in and out of batteries.

We are so thing-oriented that we ignore how a whirlpool is not a thing but a remainder, a difference between what remains present and what becomes absent as turbulence cancels itself, leaving only a "least discordant remainder."

Complexity and self-organization theory provide a breakthrough understanding of such self-organizing processes but again we have run with the breakthrough, forgetting the underlying insight. A whirlpool is not a self-organizing-thing, because it's not a self-thing and it's not, as complexity theory suggests a process, that gravitates toward an attractor-thing.

The key in all of these cases, argues Deacon is to pay attention to the "constraint dynamics" that produce these differences between what remains present what becomes absent. Heating a pizza is "constraint dissipation," the equalization of differences. The formation of a whirlpool is "constraint propagation," the compounding growth of differences, as the more turbulence cancel each other, the less discordant the remainder, which cancels even more turbulence.

Life is a different kind of constraint dynamic in which constraints constraint, maintain and preserve themselves. Deacon shows step by careful step how with life real selves emerge, not as things but as constraint begetting dynamics, producing from its origins, lineages that in self-regeneration, impose new constraints upon their environments.

And in the process Deacon's approach provides a backdoor solution to the problem of free will. It's not how life becomes unconstrained, but how it becomes the source of novel constraint, acting in novel upon the world as it does in us humans especially, but to some extent in all adaptive traits, organisms and lineages.

The burden is on scientists to show in strictly classical physical terms how informational, intentional behavior emerges from energetic behavior, not at the origins of the universe, not at the origin of the human mind, not at the origin of sentient organisms, but at the origin of life. At the origin, differences between what remains present and what becomes absent become constrained in new ways, constraints that create, preserve and maintain themselves, in ways Deacon explains.

Embracing the full implications of the underlying insight that with life there is a change in how differences happen, Incomplete Nature provides a clear step-by-step description of how intentional dynamics really emerge from physical dynamics--how informational dynamics really emerge from energetic dynamics.

Deacon's approach offers an unprecedentedly comprehensive attempt at a physical science of all informational, intentional and meaningful behavior, a theory of everything" that "does not make it absurd that we exist," a theory that might complete our incomplete theories of consciousness by naturalizing in physic science the incompleteness we experience in life's infinitely innovative capacity to produce Darwin's 'endless forms most beautiful.'

In the past century, quantum physics and general relativity expanded physics in two directions, shrinking the status of classical physics to that of a special case operative under special conditions. Deacon's approach suggests that by understanding the physics of intention, the kind of work we living creatures do, we may be on the verge of a third expansion, a physical science of mattering that expands our scientific accounts of what is physically possible to encompass what has heretofore only been physically familiar.

Imagine the consequences for science and society of having a physical explanation for functional, meaningful and conscious behavior no less scientific and accessible than our explanation for lightning. I believe Deacon provides just that.

Constrained by poor writing
By Thomas Zweifel
I read Terrance Deacon's book "The Symbolic Species" some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, and understood everything he was saying. It was written clearly. In contrast, this book was maddening and frustrating for me. It took me about six weeks to slog through it because it kept either making me confused or would put me to sleep. If I have to read a paragraph twice, I blame myself, but if I have to read it seven times, I blame the writer. His prose is often convoluted, and he invents new words needlessly. At times, it almost seems as if he is trying to be enigmatic rather than clear, as if he is intentionally speaking in Zen koans. He badly needs an editor to simplify his run-on sentences. This could have been said in 300 pages instead of 600, if his writing had been concise. The basic ideas are reasonable, however, although I failed to see how they are revolutionary or so different from others' ideas on how emergent properties might be realized in physical substrates and be maintained and evolve within a far-from-equilibrium but still physicalist paradigm. The central idea is that causation can proceed because of physical constraints placed on what is possible. How can anyone disagree with that? He confuses the matter when he talks about absence being causal, as if nothing can cause something. He gives metaphors like the hole in the hub of a wagon wheel being an absence that is causal by allowing the whole to rotate around an axle. But really, the axle is constrained by the inner rim holding spokes and to talk of the absence in the center being causal is just confusing. I sure hope a better writer can give a shorter, clearer version of Deacon's argument someday. It would be useful if someone would write a list of what Deacon's claims are in simple English, and what is really new. I read Colin McGinn's review of Deacon's book online, and found it catty and overly condemning. On the other hand, Deacon is himself to blame for making his ideas so hard to extract from the convoluted prose and neologisms.

I find it exciting, however, that scientists, including Deacon, are finally beginning to talk about physical mechanisms that lead to emergence, since philosophers going back to the British Emergentists failed to explain emergence at the level of physical mechanisms. Three other recent books do a much better and clearer job of explaining the interplay of emergence and information in my opinion. Two of them, 'Life's Ratchet' by Hoffman, and 'Physics in Mind' by Loewenstein zoom in on molecule-level biophysics to account for how microscopic 'noise' can be harnessed for the purposive ends of cells and sensory systems. Tse's 'The neural basis of free will' develops a variant of constraint-causation that he calls 'criterial causation'. He develops a new account of the neural code that is fundamentally about rapid synaptic weight resetting which in turns changes physically realized informational constraints on incoming physical and informational inputs. What these last three authors took pains to be was clear. Each of them also goes deeply into biophysics. But the prose is concise and there are not the annoying neologisms. One emerges from these other books with a sense of awe at the beauty of how physical constraints on possibilities could lead to life and mind. This was the goal of Deacon's book too I assume, but it ended up being one of the most frustrating reads of my life. I would approach emergence first by reading one of these other clearer, shorter books. Emergence of purpose and indeed mind within far-from-equilibrium dynamical systems on the basis of physical constraints is an important idea. It is so important that you might want to start with other books first.
