Charming

Wizardry of any kind is enjoying a boom at the moment, and this includes the reappearance of the "Circle of Magic" series. This is the first book of six, a nice little series that I'd love to see in omnibus edition.
Randal is an ordinary squire in Doun until the day the wizard Madoc shows up. Without any clear reason why, Randal is attracted to the life of a wizard; a prophetic dream adds to this feeling. Madoc tries to warn him off, but Randal means it: He wants to be a wizard. Madoc finally takes him to the Schola, a wizards' school.
But learning magic and wizardry are not as easy as Randal thought. "Potential" does not mean that he will pass, and wizards are forbidden to kill, lie, or use a weapon. Randal finds it unbearably difficult to do even the most basic magic. He throws himself into his studies... but just as everything seems to be turning for the better, he finds himself face-to-face with a hideous threat.
Randal is the ideal hero for any kid who has struggled in school, not through lack of effort but from lack of understanding; he's smart, brave, gutsy, and sweet. He's supported by the enigmatic wanderer Madoc, his cheerful friend Nicholas, and the ragged musician Elys.
The older wizards are well-portrayed, being stern but kindly, strict but not rigid; the Schola is likewise, a place of great learning and magic, but also incredibly difficult to get through. Writing is very good as well; Doyle/Macdonald don't talk down to their readers, or dumb things down with the assumption that the kiddies can't handle anything more complex. They also put forth the neglected idea that just because you do badly at studies doesn't mean you're stupid, and that such things can be overcome more often than not.
Many authors can't pull off trying to tell a story in fragments of six, seven, eight small books. The end results are often poorly written and horribly characterized. Garth Nix can pull it off, and so can Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald. This book is both well-written and well-characterized, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I want the Whole series. . .

In 6th grade I read my first of the Circle of Magic books, the School of Wizardry. It started me into realm of fire breathing dragons, arrogant wizards, and gallant knights. Here I was hiding the book under my notebook at school, because even then I felt embarrassed at the size and childness of the book. The books have the reading level set at the age of 9-12 and because of this many might look over them. Though these books inspired me as a youth to explore the wide variety of literature out there, I feel it can do the same for ANYONE. Debra Doyle has found a way to reach out to ALL audiences. The publicity was down, so thence the sales. But the books themselves are magnificent. As I have not so forcibly made my younger brother read them, he has become a fan at the age of 14. As he checked them out of my old Junior High, I got the chance to read them once more as a Senior in High School. Of course this time I didn't have to hide them, but flaunted them as the occasion permitted. Now this review is quickly becoming unhelpful, but the point I am trying to put across is that these books appeal to ALL ages. I love them. On my list are classics like The Hobbit, A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court, and the Wheel Of Time series. But the circle of magic (though somewhat adolescent) stand out among the best. I can't think of another book I would rather have my children read in the future, and for anyone with the love of fantasy and imagination.

Good read!

I've read this whole series of books when I was much younger, from when Randal was first a squire in his kings court, to his adventures well beyond, I won't spoil it for you.
If you like fantasy books this is definetely a good read.
Randal starts out as a young squire in his kings court with his older brother Walter who is training to be a knight. Randal was dissatisfied with his potential future. When a master wizard visited the castle to give a display of some of magic's more flashier techniques, Randal ran away from home to pursue his life in magic, much to the dissatisfaction of his family. The author does a very good job at telling this tale.

Pritchett argues that the solution is to allow functional systems to evolve locally out of an environment pressured for success. Such an ecosystem needs to be open to variety and experimentation, locally operated, and flexibly financed. When schooling fails to educate

I bought this book by accident, intending to buy Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life - which I still have not bought. Sigh. One click ordering.

It turns out to have been a happy accident, as this book gave a convincing and entirely unexpected perspective on the education challenge. As there is no review as yet, I thought to write one.

The basic thesis of the book is that education systems in the developing world are heartbreakingly bad at educating their students. The problem is the staggering dysfunction of the education systems themselves. Individual teachers or school principals can achieve remarkable results, but they are all too rare lone heroes who achieve success despite the systems they are chained to.

The author supplies a tsunami of data to show just how bad developing world education systems are and that neither money, nor more years in school, nor more teacher skill will significantly improve outcomes. To give just two of the many sad examples in the book, in some systems it is only by fifth grade that half of the students can answer a single digit carry math question like 8+9, while only 35% can identify a triangle among four basic shapes. In question after question, the results are depressingly alike. Even after years in the classroom, students haven't learned basic things that their peers in the developed world would have learned years earlier.

Meanwhile, that same school systems that can't teach single digit addition by fifth grade have elaborate, boldly produced developed country standard curricula with detailed learning sub objectives in areas such as fifth grade decimal math. It would be funny were it not so tragic.

The book argues that developing country school systems don't aim for actual education outcomes, but instead for the much easier challenge of creating the appearance of a good system with detailed curricula, professional teacher training etc. etc. However, this is but the form rather than the substance of effective education. In reality, students are warehoused in buildings laughably labelled 'schools', as if putting a 'school' label on four walls and a roof makes it so. No wonder the students stay away in droves.

While the problems are all too stark and well substantiated, the solutions are less obvious. The book is convincing that immediately obvious solutions, such as money, teacher training or more years in school, won't produce the kinds of improvements required. Instead, there need to be fundamental changes in how education systems are held accountable. The book points to tantalizing examples of success that suggest what solutions could work, even at far less cost than what is being spent now. Giving local communities much more control of elements like the hiring and firing of teachers and principals would help. Also, having education systems that force badly performing schools to fail, creating space for new schools.

Improving education outcomes is critical to people in underdeveloped countries achieving real gains in their standard of living in their own countries. The book is an important examination of the extent of the challenge and possible ways to resolve it.

Why doing more of the same won't improve learning

If you’ve been working on reforming education in developing countries for 10, 20 or 30 years and are banging your head because so little is changing, because so many of our trusted solutions don’t have the desired effects, because children lack the skills they need, this book is for you.

Lant Pritchett grapples with the pressing global challenge of millions of children who go to school but learn very little. That schooling does not translate into learning, particularly in developing countries, is clear. But what infuriates Pritchett is that too many leaders pursue the same tired solutions, focused on increasing resources and other inputs, or mimic the success of others without understanding its deeper drivers. With abundant data, experience and clear thinking, Pritchett makes a compelling case for why more of the same old trusted solutions don’t cut it any more, how we need to think deeply about how change happens and who can drive it, and why we need to suspicious of experts and blueprints.

So what is to be done? Pritchett makes a compelling case for the need to radically change our approach to education reform. This is where this book gets interesting. Pritchett’s catalogue of what’s worked, his identification of six traits of success and his comparison of (centralized) spider systems with (nimble, decentralized) starfish systems is fresh, thoughtful and provocative. It’s a passionate, personal and well informed take that will make readers stop and think differently. I hope that government officials, donors and activists will read this book; it could help them put the billions expended each year to better use, and set millions of young people on a more assured path to thrive in the world.

In 1995 I wrote my final thesis about travelling and the culture encounters travelling involves. Murphy's work was a great inspiration. At an early stage, he had a clear understanding for the necessity of taking into account the implications of tourism on the community. Now, I find myself in the centre of decision-making - how to plan regional tourism development in the future and I recall Murphy's work. And want to know- has he done more work of a similar kind on social and cultural impacts of tourism. This, I think, is the best recommendation a book can get.

Looking at key texts from the Renaissance to the present, he traces a fundamental historical change that took place in the way in which perspective was conceptualized; first a technique for constructing pictures, it slowly became a metaphor for subjectivity. That gradual transformation, he observes, has led to the rifts that today separate those who understand perspective as a historical or formal property of pictures from those who see it as a linguistic, cognitive, or epistemological metaphor. Elkins considers how the principal concepts of perspective have been rewritten in work by Erwin Panofsky, Hubert Damisch, Martin Jay, Paul Ricoeur, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and E. H. Gombrich. The Poetics of Perspective illustrates that perspective is an unusual kind of subject: it exists as a coherent idea, but no one discipline offers an adequate exposition of it. Rather than presenting perspective as a resonant metaphor for subjectivity, a painter's tool without meaning, a disused historical practice, or a model for vision and representation, Elkins proposes a comprehensive revaluation. The perspective he describes is at once a series of specific pictorial decisions and a powerful figure for our knowledge of the world.

academic, but worth the effort

Apparently condensed from a multi-volume doctoral dissertation, this book is both over and under inclusive. Elkins displays encyclopedic knowledge of his field in order to support the important and worthwhile point he makes in the introduction, but also leaves out much of the very technical detail that would have been needed to convince his fellow PH.D.s. One could just read the intro and the envoi to get the lesson Elkins hopes to teach, but I'm glad i stuck with it for the long haul through the intervening chapters. A book for those who are serious about the history of western culture.

A Model of Inquiry

I first read this book for the information I thought it might contain, and as a validation of the investigations in perspective that I was - and still am - pursuing. Recently, I picked up this book again, and now see that it is a model of skillful inquiry. Elkins may or may not have solved my previous puzzles of perspective, but he has provided me with an insight to rhetorical strategies - used to discuss "perspective" as a concept or practice - but has created a chaotic literature.
We have all encountered the cross-section of half-complete treatments of subjects in the arts; it would seem that obscurity is the preferred norm. It is meant to add mystery and dignity to its favorite topics. This is the entry "Into the Maelstrom of Metaphor" that Elkins invites us. He carefully lists three alternatives, and chooses the middle path of "critical rationalism" for his book. This serves well to simultaneously preserve the ambiguities that history has provided and to catalog some of its graphic and methodological products as regard perspective. This is not just a balanced approach, but also a model of thinking that makes us feel more intelligent and fair as readers.

Not about the Renaissance view of Perspective in Art

Rauschenbach writes as a physicist, and as is often the case, scientists have major deficits when dealing with art. The deficits are not few nor minor. Perspective was viewed as being of major significance when informed by performative rhetoric. Perspective, as with architecture, was influenced by Platonism as well as the philosophical views of the Pythagoreans. For example, room sizes had to be harmonically correct (length, width, height), not only deal with perspective alone. Photography (optics) may have a scientific way to deal with focal length to obtain optimal similarity, scale and depth with one-point linear perspective, but "horned" perspective with two- or even 3-vanishing points introduces additional considerations. Use of anamorphisms in painting, as in the famous painting "The Ambassadors" by Holbein cannot simply be forgotten (deliberate distortions of linear perspective). Lastly, perspective was used in perspective-theatres, causing problems as well As a book dealing with optics in photography, this book is fine, but a reader should not confuse this by thinking the book deals with art.
