Drs. Siamack Bondari and Jacci White are Professors of Mathematics at Saint Leo University where Dr. White is also Director of the Honors Program . They have been very active with the professional mathematics community holding offices that include President, Vice President for Programs, Vice President of Site, and Governor of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America and past Mathematics and Computer Science section chairs for the Florida Academy of Sciences. Dr. White is a past winner of the SLU School of Arts and Sciences Researcher of the Year, MAA Distinguished College or University Teacher of the Year, and Phyllis Meek Service Award for the Florida Association of Women in Education. Dr. Bondari has been serving as the chair of the Department of Mathematics & Science at Saint Leo University since spring of 2009.

A helpful primer on Hebrew law

I liked this book because it really helped to get me up-to-speed on the location and contents of the major legal collections in the Pentateuch. Though some of Doorly's biases come through, he presents a mostly balanced approach to different issues that arise with studies of the Pentateuch's legal collections. It is a quick read because, as the subtitle says, the book is actually a "handbook". It contains many helpful charts and lists, including a list of 613 laws of rabbinical tradition that is very valuable. The chapter on the administration of justice in ancient Israel provides a great resource when reading the history books in the Bible. This handbook is a quick reference guide if you are studying Ancient Near East or Hebrew laws or are just interested in learning more about them.

Simultaneously helpful & disappointing

This book is helpful in that it is well-organized, systematic, easy-to-read and chock full of lists (39pp) [which the author calls "indexes"] and 27 charts. At the same time, it's a disappointment in that it is based totally on the JEPD theory understanding of the OT's development and so, dismisses outright much of the OT as unhistorical. Example: "The references to the reading of the law by Josiah and Ezra are historical. The references to Moses and Joshua are theological projections into Israel's re-created past." (p.134)

I bought this book to use as a resource as I taught a Bible class series on the commands of the OT Law. The lists ("indexes") and some quotes (statistics, etc.) have been a real aid, but I'm still searching for a listing of the OT Law that: (a) groups the laws by subject/topic (worship, justice, the land, etc.), not by Biblical book or supposed "authors" (JEPD) and (b) takes the historical record of the Bible seriously.

Thin but handy

Doorly is small, but makes for a useful little synthesis of data on the law codes of the Pentateuch. I bought it, anyhow, only because of Baruch Halpern's acclaim for it and it rose above my expectations. As one reviewer pointed out there is a presupposition of JEDP, but only a presupposition. This is not about dividing up the literary sources of the Pentateuch according to this theory, but the specific collections of law in the Pentateuch and their setting in the history of Israel. A lot of the book is indexes and charts, but the articles are neat and nice and to the point. Pretty fair and balanced too.

Hank Runs a Bluff (From Hank the Cowdog #1: The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog) Hank has been accused of murder! In a fit of despair, Hank resigns his position as Head of Ranch Security and decides to join the outlaw coyotes on the open range. There he's known as Hunk (that's Hank in coyote language). Hank meets Missy Coyote, sister to Scraunch -- the meanest, roughest, toughest, most notorious coyote in the whole country. If Scraunch found Hank with his sister... well, look out for trouble.

"How can a nice girl like you have such a bad brother?" said Hank.

Missy shook her head. "Hunk be careful. Not safe here."

"I ain't scared. Hank ready to fight whole family for Missy."

"Hunk in trouble. Whole family here."

I looked around. She wasn't kidding. The whole danged family had arrived. We was surrounded by lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow-eyed, hungry-looking coyotes.

One of the first rules you learn in security work is never bite if you can bark; never bark if you can growl; never growl if you can talk; never talk if you can run.

In other words, when the odds are against you, the best kind of fight is none at all. That was my strategy, see. The longer I talked, the longer I could stay alive. And who knows, I just might say something that would change Scraunch's mind about tearing me limb from limb.

A hush had fallen over the tribe and all eyes were on the two of us. He sat down and leered at me.

I leered right back, tried to anyway, though I'd never really perfected a good leer.

"All right," I nodded, "you asked for it, you've really done it this time. Come on! Get off your duff and let's settle this thing once and for all. I'm tired of waiting. I mean, I came out here to get you, Scraunch. Oh, I know you thought I was messing around with your sister. Ha! That's just what I wanted you to think. It was a trap, Scraunch, and you walked right into it.

Missy glanced at me, and I gave her a smile and a wink.

Scraunch cut his eyes toward old Gut.

"Scraunch kill chicken dog."

I marched right up to him until there weren't more than a couple of inches between our noses.

"If you're determined to go through with this, let's get it on. But first, I want you to ask yourself this question: Why would a smart dog walk right into the middle of a bunch of coyotes? If you figger it out, you'll know the secret."

Nobody moved. There wasn't a sound, not a whisper. I was in the process of checking out the escape routes when an old woman coyote (Scraunch's mother) broke the circle and came out to him. She whispered something in his ear.

"No!" he growled. "Scraunch not scared, kill chicken dog!"

The old lady went to whispering again, then old Chief Gut limped over and joined the conference. They growled and snapped and snarled -- typical coyote family discussion, I would imagine.

"All right," I yelled, "time's up. Have you figgered out the secret or shall we start spilling blood?"

The old lady led Scraunch away. He glared daggers at me over his shoulder. Old Chief Gut came over and stood in front of me.

"Not fight today."

"Rats," I said, and almost fainted with relief. "All right, if that's the way you want it. We'll let it slide this time but I'm warning you, don't ever let this happen again."

"Not happen again."

"Very good. Now, if you coyotes will just stay where you are, I'll slip out of here and get on my way."

"Hunk not understand."

Missy came over.

"Hunk stay, become coyote warrior, prove himself many fight and marry Missy Coyote."

"HUH?"

"Make warrior? Well, I...I've always wanted...but I really have to..."

I tried to ease around the three coyotes who were blocking my path. When I moved, they moved. They didn't intend to let me out of there, is the way it looked.

The book entitled "Dreaming Big: My Journey to Connect India" an autobiography of Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda a.k.a Sam Pitroda portrays India's journey to modern IT revolution. Pitroda is the father of telcom revolution in India who developed world-class infrastructure in telecommunications and introduced 'Make in India' concept in early 80's. His successful attempts to get ten million dollars software contract from GE paved a way for Indian software industry to reach to export 150 billion dollars worth of software in 2015.

India was greatly benefited by two NRIs. Mahatma Gandhi came from South Africa and led freedom movement. Pitroda came from the US, initiated technology revolution and made technology accessible to every Indian.

Pitroda is true believer in Gandhi philosophy and strictly implemented Gandhian style of management throughout his career. He brought revolutionary changes in telecom industry, stopped corruption, introduced egalitarian system. He also fought against ruthless autocratic officials and powerful lobbies who sold outdated telecom equipment to the department.

Pitroda broken social-rules and lived like a rebellion. Eating cow meet in those days was an adventurism. His love story reminds Raj Kapoor's Bollywood movies. He never allowed poverty to dominate either his thought process or his lifestyle.

Pitroda is architect of Right to Education Act which is as important as universal franchise. The book narrates his attempts to make education and technology available to disadvantaged sections in the society.

The book throws insights on Pitroda contribution to rural drinking water, literacy, immunization, and edible oils.

The book reveals rare glimpses of Rajiv Gandhi, his thrust to modernize India and finding out of the box solutions to chronic problems.

India passed through a very bad phase under the leadership of VP Singh. Irresponsibly, Singh initiated political disintegration, social conflicts and economic destruction. The story of a person who started from a very meagre childhood to becoming a driving force behind the technological revolution in a big country like India was fascinating. I read this book even before it was released via amazon because a true-friend shipped me a physical copy of it the day it was released in Delhi. I did an 'all-nighter' to read it because it is not easy to put it down once you start reading it.

It tells the story of how to get stuff done, even when the odds against it are overwhelming. The piece that I really liked was that even before he became famous and influential, Sam 'decided' that he needs to meet the Prime Minister to explain his vision. To sell your vision, one should start at the 'top' and to execute one's vision successfully, one should start from the 'bottom'.

I worked at Sam's organization 'CDOT' in the 1990s and met Sam only once or twice when I worked there. I always wondered what his life story is, and this book told me all!

A Masterwork

A commentary that does not skim over texts, but goes into detail of each verse (1,400 pages for the two volumes). The two volumes have been my companion now for several months in my morning Bible study, and will be for a few months more.
Though the detail of Hebrew words is gone into, it is done in such a way that the non-Hebrew-scholar can understand. And the "Theological implications" sections at the end of each portion are a mine of spiritual treasures.
Though I am possibly not well placed as a layman to judge, for me it is THE study on Ezechiel to study.

The book is easy to read through with lots of footnotes

The book is easy to read through with lots of footnotes. Has been a big help in understanding the evil of idolatry and how far the implications reach even into our time today. While the original words were given to Israel by God through Ezekiel, the message is still relevant for us. The book helps to understand the multiple sins that were being practiced by the people that thought they were in God's favor but in reality were not, due to their wayward state of seeking out the false gods of the pagan nations. The book will shed light upon your own heart and show where repentance is needed since we all are guilty of idolatry in various forms and degrees. The book helps in unpacking the symbolic language used by Ezekiel to convey God's glory and the kinds of wrath that play out in the book. Pick up a copy and read and grow!
