Clever and Fun

This interactive book poses questions about dog breeds and lets readers choose the answers. Besides discovering interesting facts about dogs, readers will have fun. When I got to the last page, I said, "What, no more questions?" I wish I had thought of writing a book like this myself.

A book on selling that ANYONE can use!

I bought this book because I had bought Hazeldine's other book "Bare Knuckle Negotiating" and used it to save a fortune when I was buying a new house. I'm not in sales but I found this book easy to understand and use. The author uses lots of anecdotes and stories to show how easy it is to persuade people. You don't have to be in sales to benefit hugely from what this guy has to say. The author puts forward a strong case for why you need to be able to sell and be able to negotiate - he succeed with me as I've bought both his books!

This is really practical usable stuff and its nice to get the inside track on how how really good salespeople go about getting people to buy things.

Funny, touching, left me hungry for more

Jenny Gardiner's new novel, Slim to None, starts with a marvelous premise. Abby Jenning's, the food critic for a major New York newspaper, eats her way out of her job. One of the job requirements of reviewing restaurants is to remain incognito. After a photo of her appears in a competing newspaper, and her girth makes the prospect of disguising herself unlikely, her editor reassigns Abby to a desk job for six months. In that time she needs to lose weight, as well as come to terms with her relationship with food, her husband and a family she didn't know existed. She is assisted in her efforts by a homeless man who may not be as he seems, her dog Cognac, and a philandering friend. She must also do battle with a decidedly sneaky and corrupt colleague, who is standing in for her as restaurant reviewer and wants her job on a permanent basis.

The book is very funny, often unexpectedly touching and insightful. It also includes recipes at the end of many of the chapters. Overall it left me hungry for chicken and crab with cheese in phyllo and for more of Jenny Gardner's writing. Jenny Gardiner's Slim to None is simply great fun.

Slim to None Chance You Won't Like It!

I bought this book based on reviews and wasn't disappointed. As someone who isn't a twenty-something but still likes "Chick Lit", I appreciated that the main character was a little older and contemplating some major life issues. It's a very entertaining and easy read with more depth/drama (but no tears, promise!) than typical in these types of books. I thought it was a light read that was resolved - but not predictably - at the end. At the same time, there's room for more to come, so I hope the author writes more books in the series! One of the best books in this genre that I've read in a while. (Agreeing with previous reviewers, there are a few minor editing errors; if 4.5 rating was possible, with the 1/2 star reduction based only on this.)

Slim to None

Abbie Jennings loves her job as Manhattan's top food critic- until her identity is revealed and her unflattering picture with ever-expanding waistline is splashed across the newspapers. She becomes the joke of the town as the overweight food lover, and promptly loses her job at the New York Post since she can no longer go incognito to restaurants. Abbie takes this opportunity to finally go on that diet and shed some pounds, but struggles with motivation and the reasoning behind her relationship with food. To add to Abbie's problems, she is going through a difficult time with her husband, who is trying to persuade her to leave the city and finally start a family. It takes the guidance of an unusual friend to finally help Abbie see what she really wants out of life.

Slim to None by Jenny Gardiner is a good story. I didn't get real invested in the main character, and some off the story lines seemed just a bit off for me. I did like the plot, and the descriptions of some of the delectable dishes made me start eating while reading, but it just wasn't enough. Sometimes, Abbie's character came off as incredibly selfish, never really listening to her husband and continually doing things the way she wanted. There is also a best friend in the story, who I never could quite figure out what she was doing there. She popped up at random times, and during most of the meat of the story, she wasn't mentioned at all, only to return once again at the end. I found myself confused throughout the duration, as the writing was a bit all over the place and jumping from scene to scene without any real fluidity. Like I said earlier, I did like the story, I thought it was interesting though not necessarily unique, and I believe some good life lessons can be taken away from the main character's troubles. Slim to None won't be on my Favorites List, but I think some other chick lit lovers will be able to appreciate this story.

This is an exceptional technical trading book that I would recommend for
both the beginning trader and serious market professional. My trading
accuracy has greatly improved as a result of the author's timing
techniques, many of which are his own creation and have never been
available until the publication of this volume. His money management
strategies make good sense and have helped me prevent losses from
over-extending my capital, and while maximizing my profits. His Fractal
Analysis is a major contribution to the trading/money management industry.
Short or long-term investors in financial markets will benefit from
reading this book. Best that I've read so far!

A good read considering it's a dog book.

Stratton has a way of romantacizing pit fighting and exalting the APBT to a point of near "god-like" status. After reading his book, you will be totally convinced that there are only two kinds of dogs. The APBT and those that "wanna be". All jokes aside, this book is the main reason that the APBT is one of the most popular dogs today. Although I would advise you keep in mind that his opinions are extreamly biased due to his love of the breed. Nothing he says in the book is necessarily untrue but you may have to take some of it with a grain of salt. Most of his research methods are questionable and based on a "common sense" school of thought rather than using any real hard evidence or reliable documentation.
Having said that, you will find the book probably more interesting than just about any other book written on any animal whatsoever. You will most certainly find yourself looking for his other titles if you love APBTs as much as I do.

I won't say too much about the topic.....I have owned this book for over 10yrs along with several other Pitbull titled books.....I got to give it to Stratton, this has been my favorite for years....I never get tired of referring to his book, seeing that I am a dogman myself.....I just recently purchased a lil' pup from the decendant CH' Jeep.....I hope he turn's out to be just like his ancestor.....I have also recently purchased The Truth About the American Pitbull.....I hope it's as good as World of the American Pitbull Terrier....All hat's off to the great dog men of all time......ps I have owned several pitbulls in my life time....I am now going to build a new yard for success.....You'll hear from me again in the near future or even in the Gazette.....PITBULL'S LIVE ON! ARFF ARFF!

About the Author

Jason Brown is a psychologist interested in holistic and strength-based approaches to individual, family and community health. He has worked in education, corrections, and health care systems with youth and adults. His academic background is in social work and education, and his research is participatory, emphasizing the assets of individuals, families and communities that have experienced serious challenges. He is grateful to have had many wonderful teachers, including his three children Kalyee, Jenna and Kobe, his partner Shelley, as well as friends, colleagues and traditional people. Jason is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario, and teaches in the Counselling Psychology program.

David Hannis is a community development instructor and field placement co-ordinator at Grant MacEwan College.

Close but no cigar

I was looking to improve myself. I saw this was an inexpensive book on improving confidence. I had always believed I needed help in this area so I ordered it.
I originally found it on a Christian book site, and being a Christian thought that would be the place to start. I began reading, excited with the prospect that in the end I would be more confident and would have accomplished it through a Christian source.
Now that I have finished reading, I realize that it was missing a few things (thus the two stars) The focus in the book is "listening to yourself" I never understood what this meant (minus 1 star), even with the examples sited. By listening to yourself you will apparently get a proper perspective of yourself. You can't get a proper perspective from one point of view of anything (minus another star). Being that this book was suppose to be a Christian resource, I was dissapointed to discover the lack of prayer as a source of help (minus the third star). I don't remember any prayer, scripture or anything pointing to God in this book.
In the end, I came up with my own solutions (with some prayer and scripture reading and help from my husband)

Self Esteem Tackled

My mother was always trying to "cure" me as a child to turn from being an independent, attention-getting terror to her version of a tollerable human being. This is one of the books she foisted upon me in 1976. While it didn't change my life, it did effect my attitude.
The books examines how we feel about ourselves and how we judge ourselves by what others say and do and what we presume they think about us. It takes the whole self esteem issue and tackles it head on. Twenty-five years later this book is still on my bookshelf. It means more to me now, even though it is good for teens.
When we really stop to look inside of ourselves, do we like what we find? If not, why should we expect others to like us? The book examines our value system and how to learn to like ourselves.
If you need a good, easy to read book that tackles self esteem issues, especially for a teen or young adult, this is a quick read and I highly recommend it.

the first step to self development

I randomly picked up this book from a threat shop for 25 cents, only to find out how valuable it's content really is. This book questions the facade that we unconsciously use to mask our feelings and natural human state. Social conditioning has superseded us from being in touch with who we really are and therefore we can never fully develop ourselves further and grow. "We can never change substantially by changing the externals." Society has taught us to stop at the surface of things and not the depth, and as we apply that to our identity, we can never substantially grow, and as a result will lack self confidence.
