The Best Book I've ever seen (for the beginner)

First of all it took a long time before I could start with my review. Do you know why? I kept on searching for the sixth, seventh (and so on) star to give this book a rate which it deserve!!

I'm an intermediate user of Excel. That means I can solve my daily problems with formulas (not VBA). And sometimes I need some help from the internet. Then I discovered "MrExcel" and not much later "Excelisfun". It was and is amazing to follow them on youtube where they share all their knowledge for free. Bill and Mike THANKS.

If you don't follow them, you don't know what you're missing.

So when the E-book was ready to order I immediately did.

Let's talk about it

There are a lot of reasons to buy this book.

- It's easy written and every single step is explained in detail. Most of the times it is also visualised by figures.

- It is written by a man who's daily struggling with people like you and me and who's got the ability to explain it in such a way that everyone can understand.

- Everything is written in details. You don't only learn the trick but also will learn the details about it.

- It's not just an Excel book with some theoratical examples. Most examples and discussed problems are problems you'll see in the real world.

- And ofcourse all examples/problems can be downloaded on the website from Mike.

I can say a lot more but want to end with the advice that it is a must to buy this book.

Thanks to this book I understand a lot more of the formulas I already used. And now know a lot more of them.

There's one "disadvantage" for me personally. It's written in English and I'm a user of the Dutch version :)LOL So sometimes I loose some time with the translation of formulas and functions. But that's my problem :) and believe me, it's worth all the time!!

Mike Gervin with his vast teaching experience, coupled with his passion for Excel, has produced a fine book for the Beginner to the Intermediate Excel User. He deals with the subject knowing exactly the pitfalls, providing solutions in a very easy to follow way. The book is filled with pictures to guide the user and with Videos to accompany this book, This is the ONLY book I would recommend to those who would like to "excel" in Excel.

2nd chance of love at Christmastime

Brielle and Toby love story was interesting and heartfelt. It was amazing how Toby took Sebastian's words without consulting Brielle about the allegations against her. Just like any man would do with his best friend. But I was happy to read that in the end Brielle and Toby resolved their issue. And vow to always listen and talk about any problems that they may encounter together. Another great book Roxy Wilson :)!!!!!

I really liked this one, few errors, but better than Cole and Lexi story...put together better, loved and hated the fact that they waited so long in the cabin to realize their errors, because they both should of communicated better with each other, but mostly his fault, hell who ask another man something about their wife? He really didn't get the memo...But alls well that ends well. Recommend it for a quick read.

Extremely well-written, readable. Here, you can learn about airfoil (hydrofoil) theory in detail, all the way through induction effects (drag and change of angle of inflow). I read it to understand outboard racing propellers. There's is no tractable theory of the latter because of asymmetry, and because racing propellers are surfacing propellers. So you learn what you can from airfoil theory and the rest is engineering via the seat of the pants, try something and then test it to see how it works. I did that for 9 years and set 3 APBA OPC speed records along with winning 6 National Championships, so the method worked pretty well in practice for me but left the most interesting questions about what propellers are doing unanswered.

Arrived on time, perfect condition.

An awesome book from professor John Nicholas Newman from the MIT Center of Oceanic Engineering, it covers all the important knowledge of Hydrodynamics, however I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

If you never studied fluid mechanics before I recommend reading the book Fluid Mechanics from White.

ASHRAE POCKET GUIDE

As an electromchanical inspector, i have to deal with HVAC drawings and follow the installation activities in retail spaces. Because of that, commonly i am checking designs verifying if somethings can be improved and so the ASHRAE POCKET GUIDE comes to help. It have lot and updated information unvalluable for me and my partners. i strongly recommend the purchase of this book to everyone perhaps the letter size is a bit small. Its a very helpful tool. It also works as an educational complement.

Great book, not useful on my Thermal PE Exam

As the title states, it was very helpful for the HVAC problems of my PPI Professional Engineer review course. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it...), I didn't use this book at all during my PE exam, as the Thermal Fluid Systems exam was composed of almost 50% Q-dot heat transfer questions.

The life story of Ishi, the Yahi Indian, lone survivor of a doomed tribe, is unique in the annals of North American anthropology. For more than forty years, Theodora Kroeber's biography has been sharing this tragic and absorbing drama with readers all over the world.

This deluxe edition of the classic biography is embellished with pictures that help to bring the story to life. Many of the photographs were taken at the actual locations in the Deer Creek country of northern California where Ishi was born and lived for nearly half a century as a "wild" Indian. Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughterhouse near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

Lewis Gannett was a critic for the New York Herald-Tribune.

Meet the Monster....and He is Us

It isn't too common for me to start crying by the ending of a book. But this story brought me to tears. I really came to admire this reticent and dignified man, and the people who befriended him, and it saddens me to think of all the other people like Ishi who were mercilessly slaughtered. Ishi is really a representative of that hunted and slaughtered class, a class that existed right here on this California soil, and a slaughter which was perpetrated by people I thought I admired: the good old cowboy types.

This is a story of epic character (Ishi's) and epic cruelty. Please do not misunderstand me: this is not a book which has any intent of guilt-tripping anyone. But it did take me by surprise, because you can talk about slavery all day long, or the Nazis, and I feel no relation, no nexus between myself and those crimes. But, here, I felt a little weird. The degenerate conduct is very close to home, literally and figuratively. I had cowboy guns and chaps as a kid, and I pretended to shoot Indians. And that is a really pathetic thing to pretend, because Ishi was an Indian, and I've learned he was just like you and me. He and his people were rational and empathetic. There had to have been a more humane way to co-exist.

"The true ghastliness of these events is that they were carried out not by alien monsters but by people shockingly like you and me."--Karl Kroeber in the Foreword to the book written by his mother. That's exactly right. This book describes how Ishi's family and tribe was basically hunted down and exterminated right in front of his eyes as a child, in at least two major massacres and a few other lesser atrocious moments. It breaks your heart. I always thought the Indians scalped the settlers. In this book, it is the local sheriff and his gang of quasi-criminals that is scalping the Indians, including their children, in retaliation for a theft of some beans or the killing of a cow, or some other handy excuse. "No state in the Union surpassed the Golden State in systematically and shamelessly harassing, murdering, and stealing from its native inhabitants." Since I live in California, this strikes a painful chord as well. The data cited by Ms. Kroeber is compelling and I suspect unrefuted. The conduct she describes is well documented and uncontested. These Indian peoples were treated like vermin, just a little over a hundred years ago, right where your wine grapes are now growing, or nearby.

I'm perhaps unduly emphasizing negative themes. I just learned of these events, or perhaps I should say I just finally comprehended them while reading the book. They struck me out of the blue. This education about nearby and recent enormous cruelties is just a part of the reading experience, however, and isolating these events does this fantastic story no favor, and I apologize. Rest assured, this is a life-altering book, and I've mentioned only the part which shocked me in a negative way.

Ishi the man is a wonderful character, he is warmly introduced and developed here, and I can think of no character, real or fiction, which I came to care about more than Ishi. He was capable, strong, polite, free from bitterness, totally alone. His champions and protectors, Professors Kroeber and Waterman, and Dr. Popey, I came to admire and respect and envy. I loved the depictions of wild nature, and Ishi's ability to make handicrafts, a skill-set described in fabulous detail by Mrs. Kroeber. You may want to make an arrowhead or a bow based on her description. Ishi recommends Mountain Juniper for your bow-making, so heed his advice, he was master.

The writing is first-rate. Mrs. Kroeber was herself a scientist, and her book takes an artful but methodical approach to the events--both tragic and hilarious-- it describes: the way of the Indians; the way of the Yana (Ishi's tribe); the experiences Ishi endured during his hard life in the wild; the discovery of Ishi; the revelations from Ishi; the "camping trip" with Ishi in his old home territory (and his anxiousness to return to the city: he learned to love beds, toilets, stoves, towels, and the other "clever" inventions of the white man); and Ishi's demise from tuberculosis.

I am one of those people who marks up a book as I read it. My copy had virtually every page marked up by the end. This book is so thought-provoking and idea-rich on so many levels it will take me years to fully asimilate it.

One of the newspaper reviewers is quoted on the cover: "A book every American ought to read." True. And, I suspect, every American will be deeply enriched and rewarded for the effort. But the ending is still sad, when you think of what Ishi endured and how little time he had in his hard, hard life to enjoy things. I kept imagining the things I would show Ishi if I had the chance: Disneyland; a Rolling Stones concert; a Benny Hill video, lasagna, a motorcycle ride.

He only spoke about 600 English words by the end, but you will understand him very well. And, I'm confident, he will be someone you deeply respect.

This is an excellent and significant book. I have replaced it a couple of times over the years, because it doesn't always come back when lent out. This particular hardbound edition from U of California Press 1976 is the best I have owned with many more and sharper photos and at over 7x10 inches a well designed layout.
As for the context - well, this is the real life story of when the Stone Age meets the sharp edge of the Industrial Age and all the tragedy mass humanity can bring upon the land. It is also the true story of how knowledge and our better character can bridge those worlds... You won't regret this read, it stays with you.

An anthropologist on Mars

At the beginning of the 20th century a half-starved 50-year-old Indian was found in a remote farm in California. He was the last surving Yaki Indian. Before the arrival of white settlers there had been probably more than 2000 Indians of that tribe in the area. They were wiped out in less than 80 years by the diseases carried by europeans, the reduction of their natural environment and periodical retaliatory expeditions organized by band of vigilantes to revenge a stolen cow or horse or the killing of one white settler. The last surviving Yaki was lucky enough to be "adopted" by the curators of the Museum of Berkeley University. There the Indian lived happily for 5 years, working as janitor and a sort of living exhibit. The anthropologist studied him and his world, and he studied the world of whites, showing a remarkable degree of adaptability to modern American society. He was called Ishi (=man) by the staff of the museum because he always refused to say his own name. Loved by everybody and friend of everybody, he died of the tubercolosis that his natural defence did not recognize. The story was written 50 years after his death by the daughter of the museum's director through the notes of her father (she had never met Ishi). Even being a perfectly scientific book, it has the power of moving of a novel and contains a terrible caveat for the modern man.

a heart-warming true story of an immigrant from Georgia, Rus

This is the story of a man who loved America from the moment he set foot on our shores. He said, and never changed his mind that, in America, "Anything Can Happen." There are many vignettes in his book, telling of his adventures and misadventures in America, but he never changed his opinion that he loved America, even though he sought the companionship of other Georgians. This book was made into a movie which fell far short of the book, which dealt with his honesty, integrity, and love for all pertaining to America and his fellow men. This book is heart-warming, poignant, and often brings a tear to the eye; in other parts it brings a chuckle or a laugh or a general thumbs-up. I have read the book a number of times not only to myself, but aloud to my family, especially when traveling. I heartily recommend this book to anyone!

Best Laugh Therapy

I love this book and have read it many times. When I have a friend who needs cheering up, I loan them my copy. It is usually passed around to their family & friends before I get it back. If ever one is in need of hope, this story provides a beautiful example of people helping, loving, laughing and eating together. It is the quintessential story of immigration to America with its deprivation, hard work and eventual success. With the help of Georg's wife, it is told with the indiosyncratic syntax of a non-native speaker of English which makes you feel the author is telling his adventures to you directly. Papashvily was an amazing person and one of the few authors that I would love to have spent an evening with listening to his stories. This makes a great gift of joy to anyone you know.

A laugh, an inspiration

This collection of humorous short stories describes America as seen through the eyes of an immigrant from the country of Georgia who first stepped foot in the USA in the early 1920s.

First published in 1945, it was co-written by Mr. Papashvily and his wife Helen in the author's original style of "Georgian" English. The author was, according to Wikipedia, a famous writer and sculptor who was listed in Who's Who in the categories of both writing and art. Chapters in this book deal with topics such as getting a job (the author was trained in Georgia as a swordmaker and a decorative leatherworker), joining a labor strike, going to court for a crime he didn't commit, helping a friend work his way through depression (the cure: Uncle John's garlic sauce, freshly grilled shish kebobs, and a fight with a trio of Italian/American farmers who thought the Georgians' picnic fire on the beach was set by bootleggers to attract their boats, but later contributed their own homemade wine when invited to join the party), marriage (Uncle John, a restaurateur, catered the wedding feast and it sounds delicious!), and trying to find someone--anyone--who could speak the author's little-known native language (eventually he succeeded).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who remembers America as it was sixty-plus years ago, and/or who is ready for some thought-provoking humor.

A masterpiece, quite simply

Agree with Pound's political views or not, this body of work is a masterpiece. Ezra Pound, the founder of the school of Imagisme, exhibits true mastery with poetical form, language and symbolism, writing in English, French, Chinese, Greek... this is an immense body of work with hundreds of poems to feast your mind on. This book changed my life, and I recommend it to anyone willing to invest the time to THINK about poetry and APPRECIATE the craftsmanship of what some call a madman and others, a master.

Best introduction to Ezra Pound ever

Kearns is the best guide to Ezra Pound out there, even though this book was written awhile ago. He knows what you need to know to read the stuff and what you don't, and he makes the poetry come alive. There's a lot to get past with Pound -- the politics, the fragmentary style, the arcane references -- but with the influence of Chinese poetry coming to the fore now, and with the underlying total beauty and stay-w0th-you quality of the work itself, Pound deserves your close reading. If you like what you see here, read The Cantos with Kearns's Guide to the Selected Cantos in hand.

About the Author
L. Dodge Fernald is Senior Lecturer on Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling/ Clinical Psychology from Cornell University and has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Madrid and as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He was the Assistant Dean of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program at the Harvard Extension School until summer 2001. His basic textbook, Introduction to Psychology, that went through several editions with Houghton Mifflin and Prentice Hall and he has written other books for Erlbaum (The Hans Legacy: A Story of Science) and Macmillan (Walking Tour of Walden Two, with a Foreword by B. F. Skinner). He has received the Petra T. Shattuck Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Harvard Extension School, and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Division Two - Society for the Teaching of Psychology. His areas of interest include psychological measurement, clinical practice, and the educational implications of psychology.

Bought this book for my undergrad capstone class and it was very informative of the different perspectives in psychology. Each chapter goes in depth on the particular perspective and comes with a summary and important key words at the end of the chapter. Also, there are a couple questions that you should be able to answer at the end of the chapter. Overall, really great textbook and sums up the perspectives perfectly.

When he first went to Leeds United, and then Manchester United, both times I wanted him at Liverpool, but let me talk about the book. Very candid and thoughtful. pretty much addresses his life and every aspect of his career and the happenings during that time. If you follow the game, you will make connections about things that were said, and the clarity he brings to it. Great book I will read it again sometime.

Great read.

All Manchester United fans and England's fans will love this.

I think he wrote this book 2/3 years too early. Wait till he retired.

He has a year or 2 in France or the MLS. Then maybe India.

Wonderfull career. Great stories.

Nothing better than working with Sir Alex.

A good casual read. Gives a good insight to the day to day life and experiences of a modern pro. Rio seems to be at a time in his career when he can reflect and tells of his clear pathway into life after football.
