A broad-based view Ricardian economics

As one of the classical economists, Ricardo seems to slip through the fingers of economic history readers. Until now, I've had respect for Ricardo and his "classics" but Mark Blaug does a great job of exposing Ricardo thoughts and it's about time. One of the few things that Ricardo wrote, that I agree with, is the limits we should place on government. He believed it was a horrible allocator of resources. To hang your theories on the price of corn, as crazy as it sounds, is a terrible way to annoint someone like Ricardo a "giant in economic thought". Blaug mentions several examples of Ricardo not even bringing up "substitutes" for corn and it's importance on price level changes. In summary, this is a fantastic book written by an amazing scholar (Blaug) and should be read by anyone interested in economics.

Pick this book for your personal or school-wide Professional Development.

This book is an excellent choice for a personal or staff-wide professional development series. It's short (enough), it's not just for social studies teachers (Westhiemer makes this point early on), and it speaks to the myriad reasons for why we got into teaching in the first place. (Hint: it isn't because we want to raise test scores). It's serves as an exemplar of how to refresh your teaching staff and school community after years of getting beat over the head with PD that is "driven" at us instead of with and by us.

When I first read the WKoC article by Westheimer and Kahn going on 9 years ago, it changed my teaching practice for the better. My students became more engaged, and I felt like it helped me to redefined my purpose, my framing for getting up in front of these young people each day. The book is a refresher too, and Westheimer elucidates on the different ways schools and after school programs can and are investing their energies in Civic Education and the reasons why we should continue to re-prioritize (and reclaim) American education in this manner. Westheimer draws on not only Freire and Dewey, but contemporaries such as Lisa Delpit, Brian Shultz, and Bob Peterson, to really ground this reading in the historical and current contexts for Civic Engagement in schools.

Another excellent and timely book by Joel Westheimer. In an era of obsession with high stakes mandatory standardized testing public discourse becomes focused on increasingly narrowly defined learning outcomes. Westheimer reminds us that we need to have the conversation not just about whether something is learned, but also about what is worth learning. This book is an accessible, carefully reasoned, examination of the limits of the audit culture currently suffusing our schools. More importantly, for me at least, it provides a vision of the alternative--a more pluralistic, democratic, and ambitious conception of education in the 21st century. Westheimer's vision is not mere fantasy, but is illustrated with real examples from practice of what is possible, if we have the will to insist on something better for our children and communities.

The issue of citizenship is a hot-button one for sure. What I thought was so interesting about the way that Joel Westheimer addresses it in his book WHAT KIND OF CITIZEN is that it allows us to realize it's not just about what we say. It's about how we live and what we do. We are able to get slivers of his own personal story and also see the way the school system might not be doing all that it came to help students better understand and appreciate the importance of education, not just getting a certain score.

This is the kind of book that will have you reading and contemplating what kind of citizen you want to be versus what kind you are being encouraged to be---and the role of education plays in the answer.

I bought this for a friend. It came highly recommended from another friend. An alternative to a medical system which now offers mind and body numbing pills almost exclusively aimed at controlling - not curing - mental illness. It is certainly at least worth a try.

Excellent help for anxiety/panic attacks

I have been using this book for 45 years, since I was 16yrs old. I carried it with me for years reading from it when I felt like I was losing my mind. Have recommended it to many many people. I recently purchased it for one of my children who is now having some anxiety problems. This book along with Recovery incorporated meetings can save your life.

My name is Connor, I'm 9 years old, and I loved this book. The book, "Timmy Failure, Sanitized for your Protection," is action-packed, and (in my opinion) is better than the other three in the series. I recommend this book to people who like "Diary of a Wimpy kid," and "Big Nate."

A Laugh For An Odd Life

I had my 10-yr-old son read this aloud for homeschool, and there were moments when we could not stop laughing. Timmy is a funny and quirky character who loves using big words, which were a nice challenge for my son.

I'm bedridden and homeschool my son from my sick-bed; our home life is as quirky as Timmy's personally. We needed a good laugh and a relatable character, and Timmy did not disappoint.

Dr. Baker reveals that the Third Eye derives its power from the pineal, pituitary and carotid glands, allied to ‘whirlwinds’ of energy known as ‘chakras’ or force centres. There are seven of these centres in the human body, their physical location being the base of the spine, the solar plexus, the spleen, the heart, the throat, the brow, and the top of the head.

Five safe techniques for arousing the Third Eye are provided. They have been practised by the author ‘without hazard and with many rewards for over forty years.’ In our present condition we can only observe the outer surface of the planet, manifesting in gaseous, liquid and solid form. We are completely unaware of the subtler states of matter beneath these outward appearances. About the Author
Dr. Douglas Baker B.A., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.

Douglas Baker, English born and raised in South Africa has done extensive scientific research into those hinterlands of the mind which one might call psi-semantics.

His transformative experiences during the Second World War, when twice severely wounded, set the pattern for his life long investigations into the Powers Latent in Man.

Douglas Baker graduated in the Arts & Humanities in South Africa and qualified in medicine at Sheffield University (UK) in 1964.

Having taught in the East End schools of London for 10 years, he began his incredible lecture tours of the Western world giving lectures and seminars in Esoteric Healing, Esoteric Anatomy, Esoteric Astrology, Esoteric Psychology and Metaphysics.

He, more than any other, set in motion the trends towards alternative methods of medicine which have transformed that field in Britain today.

As medical advisor to the De la Warr laboratories in Oxford, he undertook research into Biomagnetism and its effects on the human aura and dark matter, producing the book by the same name in conjunction with George de la Warr.

Through the years he has given more than 10,000 lectures and attracted people all over the world to his Esoteric Science Festivals staged in London, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Canada and the United States.

His personal research and experimentation in Alchemy drew forth his book The Diary of an Alchemist.

Douglas Baker established Claregate College, first in America and later in England the 1970's and encouraged many hundreds of people to systematise their esoteric studies by attending seminars, and through the Claregate Correspondence Course.

His College's film faculty produced an exciting dramatic account of a period in the life of Paracelsus, the father of modern and complementary medicine. This million-pound production, with some of Britain's finest actors was released at the Cannes Film Festival in 1991.

His extensive esoteric works are said to be the largest collection in the produced by a living author. He has written over 100 books and his list of audio tapes extends to include 400 live lectures given around the world.

His books are now being translated into the 7 European languages.

Douglas Baker has led the field in esoteric astrology, producing with a team, his magnum opus, a Dictionary of Astrology for the 21st Century in three volumes. This is in addition to the already existing 11 volume set of text books on the same subject.

An unqualified YES!

My response to the material presented in this book when I first encountered it in 1993 was an unqualified "YES!", and time has not diminished my enthusiasm. This is and was the only system that has ever resonated so deeply with me in terms of understanding why "things are the way they are", not only in my own life, but with regard to the human experience in general.
I found the model of the soul experience in the earth plane presented in this book to be intellectually coherent, spiritually satisfying, and emotionally comforting. The book also contains some interactive exercises that were remarkably accurate in helping me determine my own "spiritual profile" based upon the Michael model.
If you have nagging questions that you just can't resolve (e.g., Why is life so unfair? Why do bad things happen to good people?), or if you're just curious about why we're all here, you may find this book to be very enlightening. I sure did!
The book's one weakness: As another reviewer pointed out, the editing could have been a lot better. However, this is a minor issue and does not detract from the quality of the information presented.

Informative and fun

I first read The Michael Handbook several years ago and have found it one of the most useful in my spiritual "meanderings". A description of this system was apparently first published by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, but has spread far and wide since (her publishing company doesn't seem too happy about that!). The book being channeled doesn't bother me--if you can't be open minded about sprituality, you should pick another subject. I like things spelled out clearly without a lot of double talk--the book does exactly that. The more you read, the more you learn about yourself and why you are the way you are. By the time you finish, you have a complete picture. This picture isn't an excuse, it's a starting point. You have to take it from there.

My only complaint would be the desktop publishing: I'm a copy editor and I'm sorely tempted to edit it and send it back to the publisher to fix. It doesn't seem like anyone proofread it.

the perfect introduction to the Michael system

This is an excellent book on the Michael teachings, which can serve both as a clear and manageable introduction to newcomers to the Michael information as well as a resource for those already familiar with the Michael system. The book may well have changed my life. Highly recommended.
