A clear and profoundly illuminating meditation on art

This is simply one of the best books I have ever read.
On one level it is a critique of contemporary thinking about architecture. In the first part of the book Harries argues that the aesthetic approach to art doesn't do justice to the meaning and power of architecture. In the second part he argues that the semiotic approach to architecture is based on a model of language that cannot fully grasp and illuminate the symbolic dimension of architecture. In the third and fourth parts Harries tries to show that questions of architecture are ultimately questions of dwelling (broadly conceived), that questions of dwelling are irreducibly ethical and political, and that architecture thus has an irreducible ethical and political function.
On a deeper level the book is a critique of modern philosophies of art. Harries follows thinkers such as Heidegger, Gadamer, and Agamben in criticizing the aesthetic approach to art (which regards artworks simply as beautiful or interesting objects) and theoretical approaches to art (which regard artworks as the expression or illustration of ideas that can best be grasped and articulated with philosophical concepts). Harries argues that artworks have the power to illuminate the world and to call us back to what really matters, and that art is a (nontheoretical) way of responding to basic questions of human existence (How should we live? What does it mean to be human?)
Unlike Heidegger, Gadamer, and Agamben, however, Harries develops his arguments with a great number of specific, concrete examples drawn from the whole history of Western architecture and art. So while the book is philosophically ambitious, it is also exceptionally clear, sober, and down to earth.
Finally, I should note that the writing itself is beautiful--it is simple, precise, and conveys a sense of deep concentration and wonder.
The Ethical Function of Architecture won the American Institute of Architects 8th Annual International Architecture Book Award for Criticism. But it is about more than architecture. I recommend it very, very highly to anyone interested in Heidegger, phenomenology, aesthetics, ethics, poetry, literary theory, modernity and modernism, and the history and philosophy of art.

A rare thoughtful consideration of architectural meaning

Harries, a professor of philosophy at Yale, has a long-standing interest in architecture. (Disclosure- I took his course on the Philosophy of Architecture while a grad student in the early 80's.) Himself a student of Heidegger, Harries's work in architecture has largely been a reassessment and continuation of Heidegger's thought on technology and dwelling. The book under review is a summary of Harries's thinking on architecture. The "ethical function" referred to in the title concerns architecture's ability to express the ethos of the society that produces it. Harries effectively demolishes the esthetic and functional approaches to architecture and makes a convincing argument that what distinguishes architecture from mere building is its ethical function.

this is a 'must' reading for anybody interested in architectural theory and philosophy ... but it goes way beyond, connecting ethics and aesthetics within a contemporary discourse that transcend post-modern, post-structuralist and phenomenologist biases. This is my third copy and i required it as a reading to all my students in architecture theory.

An intriguing account of what it takes to start from scratch a conservation foundation that is based in the Christian faith. Truly an amazing story that every person of faith will find uplifting and inspiring.

gently compelling, inspiring, engaging

Leah Kostamo has written a beautiful story of a remarkable community. "Planted" tells the tale of one woman's journey of faith and action in the world of environmental education and community activism. If you're nervous about picking up a book that pulls together the hot topics of Christianity and environmentalism, let me quickly assure you that Kostamo tells her story with a light touch. There isn't the slightest hint of the sort of self-righteous soapbox rhetoric often associated with faith-based or environmental activism. But make no mistake, writing with a light touch does not mean she writes without passion. Rather, Kostamo shares her story out of a beautifully grounded, earthy, humble passion—a passion that is as compelling as it is inspiring. Her writing style is personal, tender, often humorous, and strikingly honest. This is a very engaging read. I highly recommend it!

Beautiful, Elegant, and Eloquent.

This is a beautiful book. Few books have managed to capture the essence of nature, the joys of community, and the affirmation of a simple calling like this one. Leah Kostamo, a wife, a former campus ministry worker, as well as a co-founder of the A Rocha ministry based in BC Canada, has shown us how good stories can be told with simplicity, with insight, and with humour. Combining her love for creation and conservation, her natural talent for observing details in ordinary things, her passion for community building, coupled with her eloquent use of words, this book is destined for greatness in the literary world. As a memoir, readers will be humbled at how the author and her husband Markku would give up lucrative careers, sell their house, and to pour all their assets into a non-profit ministry without guarantee that it would even survive its initial years. Yet, it did and it did so marvelously, blessing, teaching, and enabling thousands of visitors and volunteers at their farm facility. The ministry in Canada began as a seed back in 1996 at a Regent College course entitled, "Incarnational Mission" led by Peter and Miranda Harris, who had founded A Rocha in Portugal. Eight years later, the idea took root, and sprouted trunks and branches through personal investments as well as generous givers and loaners by those who expressed faith enough to walk with the Kostamos.

The book is also a mini-ecological guide. We learn about the threats of worldwide extinction of 13% of birds, 25% of mammals, and 41% of amphibians. We see how a tiny shrimp plays its microscopic role in a complex and delicate ecological environment, that benefits beavers, bears, and big trees. We read about invasive species, weeds, the birds, and even slugs. Along the way, Kostamo makes sure we do not get carried away in the natural world and forget about the technological world. With a deft touch of humour, she compares and contrasts pods of orcas with iPods! It can also be used as a primer in becoming more nature aware. We are encouraged to think about the tap water we have, to think about its source, its distribution channels, and all the resources poured into the whole system. We are challenged to think about the gardens, how the seasons impact life, the variety of birds and nature around us, and even rocks and minerals that seem so mundane for the busy individual.

It is also a guide for a deeper awareness of what eating entails. For those of us whose limited vocabulary of eating centered around restaurants, the food on our tables, or the kitchen, we get invited into a world of farming, of growing our own food, and the beauty of real food over processed stuff. Food is not just something to be consumed, but it can incorporate a work of art in itself. Beyond the feasting, we will appreciate the preparation beyond mere cook books, and to be respectful in the way we partake of God's providence for us. Slowly but surely, the book becomes a rallying point in the practice of Micah 6:8, that we learn to live justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly. Very aptly, the book closes with a relook at the biblical Sabbath, reminding us that working hard and doing good have their limits. Man can only do so much. Everything else totally depends on God alone. The keeping of the Sabbath is a powerful reminder that we by ourselves are limited. That is why Sabbath keeping enables us to be natural ourselves one day a week, as we busy ourselves with nature on the other six days.

This book is a rare find. More accurately, the book found me. When contacted to do this review, I promptly agreed because of curiosity in part, and to support a fellow Regent alum as well. Little did I know that I would be receiving a literary gem, a unique seed that germinates in me a greater appreciation of nature and creation. Most of all, I am humbled by how the Kostamos' passion-turned-reality have blessed people of all ages from all walks of life. There is a lot of material in this humble looking book. Open it up at any one page and you can easily find a point or two to learn from and to contemplate after.

I am full of praise of the quality of this book. I particularly appreciate the three points to show us the way forward, namely; 1) Practice Gratitude; 2) Practice Generosity; and 3) Practice the Sabbath Keeping. On all three counts, I say a hearty Amen! A clear best of the best so far in my 2014 stack of books.

Good Book!

I participated in math competitions throughout high school. Classical geometry shows up a lot less in college math than in olympiads, and this book has been a great way for me to continue working on these types of problems (which I've always enjoyed). I found this book really exciting and engaging. The solutions are written clearly and the problems are fun!

This is a second book of the Royals of Monterra. This is the series that has spun off the fan fiction kindleworld of same name. I guessed what would happen in the end but was worth the journey. Now I have to wait for the next book.

Lemon Beauchamp. has one client and that is the Royals of Monterra. She has arranged one of the twins Prince Dante to be on a reality dating show. Dante is such a flirt. Lemon is tired of having all her boyfriends cheat on her. So she is engaged to someone who she has known forever. Lemon ends up filling in for one of the women who was kicked off.

Prince Dante has been flirting with Lemon since he has met her. He is not afraid to tell her how special she is to him. I like Dante. He is hansom, rich, sense of humor and treats Lemon as a special women in his life. He loves his family and country.

Lemon is fighting her feelings for Dante. She almost becomes what she blames the men in her life for. She is conflicted about her choices.

This is romantic, funny, sad and clean story. I wish it was set more in Monterra. Instead of mostly in California.

One of the best happily ever after stories you will ever read.

I was very impressed with Sariah Wilson's first entry in this series, Royal Date (The Royals of Monterra). It was well written, sweet, romantic, and enjoyable. I recommended it to my friends and heartily recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good romance story, especially one involving princes and princesses and happily ever afters.

But Royal Chase is a different kind of book all together. It will draw you in, hold you tight, and not let you go. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you burst with happiness. It has well realized, believable, and genuine characters that will win you over and keep you rooting for them all the way through. And it is one of the best books that I have ever read in my life.

It begins a short time after the end of the first book, and while it is not necessary to have read it to understand what is going on (as the author does a good job of filling in relevant details), it will definitely add to the experience. This is especially true of several of the supporting characters, whose relationship to Lemon, our heroine, won't be fully grasped without the context of their encounters in the preceding story.

And with that, I give you my spoiler lite preview:

Lemon is fresh out of graduate school, just got engaged to a childhood sweetheart, and is in the trenches of her newly created Public Relations firm and its first client, the royal family of the sovereign country of Monterra. Having a personal connection to the family, her best friend being engaged to the Crowned Prince, she has further motivation to see her proposed plan proceed without a hitch. That plan: to increase tourism and awareness of Monterra by having one of its prince's star in the hit reality show, "Marry Me". But when that plan is threatened with disaster, Lemon is forced to participate as a contestant herself. As Prince Dante begins to break down the walls of hurt and mistrust that a lifetime of cheating boyfriends have left on her heart, Lemon is faced with a choice: stick to the safe path and marry the fiancé she doesn't love, or follow her heart and risk a heartbreak she knows she would never recover from.

First I should add that this is a book apart of a series. However, you can read as a standalone if you want. I highly recommend starting with the first one, you get a better depth of each character.

“Should we ask to see the dessert menu?” “Really? Sterling never lets….” I stopped. I shouldn’t compare. It wasn’t fair. Dante’s eyes narrowed. “Any man who denies you dessert should be horsewhipped.” I felt like I should defend the mutual decision to stay away from sugar and all related carbs. “I don’t want to get fat.” He still looked skeptical. “Please. You wouldn’t want me to get fat either.” “Then there’d just be more of you to love,” he said conspiratorially.

Oh how I loved this book!

In this book you meet again Lemon, best friend of Kat. The Southern Belle. Lemon Beauchamp has recently become the new PR for The Royal Monterra Family. With a little bit of reality television in the US, what better to use the hunky Dante, notorious for being a womanizer.

During the show “Marry Me”, there has been a little ‘glitch’… Hmm. One of the contestants has found out that the “bachelor” is well… a PRINCE. So, she gets the boot! All they have left is Lemon to fill in.. No one else has gone through the proper screening and better yet, Lemon can spy on the girls and let Dante know which one really loves him. But, is it worth it? Lemon deep down cares for Dante more than just a friend. Can she do it?

SPOILERS

GAH! I had a feeling that Rafe was some how completely up to something as well. I loved how Lemon made a really good friend and even she could say she was good for Dante. Which was hard for her to admit. I loved some of the goofy and mean characters on the show, totally reminded me of the bachelor and I completely LOL’d quite a few times. I love that they shared their “first kiss” under the Lemon Tree like all her other family members did too. I HATED her fiancé Sterling. OMG I wanted to throat punch him. Overall, this book was just literally a fun read. I can fully admit that I couldn’t put it down. It was that good.

Sariah Wilson, I cannot wait for the next book. I HOPE its coming soon :)
