A rich beautiful narrative to the history of the Roman republic

This book is better than many college courses. Tom Holland is amazing, not only does he give an account for the political upheavals and political changes in the Republic of Rome during its pre-imperial history. But he gives an insight into the people's lives and psyche's that I have only seen in the very best of history professors.

You not only understand the history of Rome, but why the people act the way they do. If you have any interest in Rome I would highly recommend this book. I will also look for anything else by Tom Holland as he is truly a giant in the field of Roman History.

Make Tiramisù
 

3 eggs, separated
3 tbsp sugar
1 cup 1/2lb/250g mascarpone
1tbsp grated lemon zest
6. oz/200 g ladyfingers
4 tbsp strong espresso
2 tbsp cocoa powder
 ,
 
Beat half of the sugar with the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Beat the remaining sugar with the egg yolks until creamy
 
Add mascarpone and lemon zest to the egg yolks and stir well.
 
Carefully fold in the beaten egg whites
 
Soak the ladyfingers in the espresso.
 
Cover the base of the rectangular baking dish with the soaked ladyfingers. Spread half of the mascarpone evenly over it. Repeat the process. Chill the tiramisù for at least 4 hours.
 
Sprinkle with cocoa powder before serving.

I just happened to see this cookbook at the library in the new nonfiction section. Thought, "Hmmm." Grabbed it and checked it out, without even flipping through it. And? It's the one I've needed my whole life. No exaggeration. It's illustrations, step-by-step, of how to do and make all kinds of things. No reading or skimming. Just seeing and finding. It's brilliant!
